Women's Tennis Records First Win Of 2021; Edges Monmouth 4-3

Little Silver, NJ – Down 1-0 in the overall match after doubles play and facing an early deficit in singles play, the Wagner women's tennis team rallied back to win four straight singles matches, including the match-winner at No. 2 in defeating Monmouth, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Seahawks move to 1-3 on the season while the Hawks drop to 1-3.
 
"We got off to a slow start this afternoon after dropping the doubles point," commented head coach Lynn Kiro. "Monmouth came out ready to compete from the start. Our team knew what they had to do and rattled off four straight points to secure the win. I am very proud of the way they came back and competed after being down. While we are happy to get our first win, it is back to work for us." 
 
In doubles, Wagner collected a win at No. 2 play as Fidan Khalilzade and Tara Dakic defeated the Monmouth duo of Zoe Klapman and Lenien Jamir, 6-2. The Hawks earned the first overall point after picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 play.
 
Monmouth went ahead 2-0 in the match after picking out a 6-1; 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
 
Wagner got on the board as Gabrielle Perraudin outlasted Madison Mills, 6-3; 6-4, at No. 4 which started the rally.
 
At No. 1 singles, Khalilzade defeated Ann Spurka, 6-2; 6-4 as the Seahawks tied the match at 2-2. Alegra D'Alessandro picked up a 6-4; 6-4 triumph over Sydney DeNardo at No. 5 that gave the visitors a 3-2 edge in the match.
 
Samantha Lugtu sealed the victory for the Seahawks, besting Nicole Gasser, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2.
 
The Seahawks will be back on the courts on Friday, April 2, as Wagner takes on Saint Francis U in Northeast Conference (NEC) action. 
 
The match is set for a 10:00 a.m. start at the CSI Tennis Courts.
