Women's Tennis Drops Heartbreaker To Mount St. Mary's, 4-3, In NEC First Round

West Windsor, NJ – The fifth-seeded Wagner women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to #4 Mount St. Mary's in the opening round of the 2021 Northeast Conference (NEC) Women's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. 
 
The Seahawks end the season with 1-4 record while Mount St. Mary's improves to 4-6 and will take on the top-seed, LIU, on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals. 

"The girls showed so much grit today, which makes me such a proud coach," said head coach Lynn Kiro. "We came out and battled and I am so extremely proud of how far they have come during my time at Wagner." 

The Mountaineers took the doubles point to open the match, as the Seahawk pairing of Samantha Lugtu and Gabrielle Perraudin dropped a 6-1 decision to Megan Smith and Shirley Liang. Mount St. Mary's won at No. 3 via default.  Mount St. Mary's went ahead 2-0 as they claimed the victory at No. 6 by default. 

Senior Fidan Khalilzade outlasted Smith at No. 1 singles, 7-5; 6-3, to put Wagner on the board.  

Lugtu and Liang squared off in No. 2 as the match needed three sets to decide a winner. Liang took the first set, 6-4 before Lugtu rallied back in the second by the same count to force the third and final set.  Both competitors went back-and-forth with Liang edging out Lugtu, 6-3, to put Mount St. Mary's ahead, 3-1. 

Wagner got a pair of wins at No. 3 and 4 to even the match at 3-3.  Newcomer Tara Dakic got past Riya Mathur, 7-5; 6-3 while Perraudin avenged the earlier doubles setback, besting Ana Alvarez-Storni, 7-6 (7-5); 6-1.
 
No. 5 singles featured Alegra D'Alessandro against Mount's Adrianna Barney with Barney sending the Mount to the next round with a 6-0; 6-1 win over D'Alessandro.
