Seahawks Drop Both Games Of Saturday's Doubleheader Against Sacred Heart

Lakewood, NJ – The Wagner College baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader Saturday against Sacred Heart at FirstEnergy Park. The Seahawks suffered a 13-3 setback in game one before falling 5-2 in game two.

Sacred Heart has now won five straight games to move to 7-13 overall and 4-2 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. Wagner has dropped three straight contests to fall to 4-7 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.

Game 1 Recap
The visitors struck for two runs in the opening inning as Justin Jordan led off with a single to left and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Wagner's Josh Casado. Elijah Brown drove in Jordan on a single to right for the game's first run. Following a walk to Isiah Daubon, Robert Farruggio sent a sacrifice fly to right, plating Brown for the second SHU run.

Wagner created its first chance of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Jared Gillen led off with a single to left and moved to second on a fielder's choice from Tyler Sanfilippo. With two out, Griffin Schneider had an infield single to third, giving the Seahawks runners on the corners. Sophomore catcher, David Melfi drew a walk to load the bases but the Pios starter, Ryan LaMay, got Caleb Ward to fly out to right, ending the threat.

Wagner's next chance came in the second. Jake Lutz sent a one-out single up the middle and moved to third after Gillen's second hit of the day found space through the right side; Gillen then stole second.  LaMay was replaced by Tyler Briggs after sustaining an injury and Briggs promptly ended the inning with a strikeout of Sanfilippo.

The Pioneers tacked on a run in the fifth off Justin Beyer, who replaced Casado, taking a 3-0 lead. With a runner on second, Farruggio doubled to left center, bringing in Austin Markmann. Wagner tried to respond, getting Schneider and Melfi to second and third with one out, but David Aufiero, who came in for Briggs, retired the next two hitters.

Following a scoreless sixth, Sacred Heart capitalized on four Wagner errors in the seventh, which led to ten runs as SHU took a 13-0 lead. Brown cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right-field line that made 10-0. Markmann stepped up and launched a two-run home run to left before Daubon connected on a solo home run to right.

The Seahawks scored their runs over the final two innings. Gillen sent a sacrifice fly to center that scored Ruggiero, who reached on a single to center. In the ninth, Johnny Kampes sent a one-out single to short. Emil Matti, pinch-hitting for Ruggiero, kept the ball fair down the first baseline, giving the Green & White two runners on. AJ Medrano sent a double to left that scored both runners before Quinn Mimnaugh struck out swinging to end the contest.

Casado was saddled with the loss (0-2) after going 4.2, in which he gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits while issuing six walks and recording three strikeouts. Briggs picked up the win for Sacred Heart.

Gillen and Schneider each had two hits in the opener while Freddy Sabido moved to within one hit of joining the 200-hit club after finishing 1 for 5.

Game 2 Recap
Wagner jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap. Starter Pat Gallagher retired the Pioneers in order in the top half. Gillen continued his hot hitting, leading off with a single up the middle. Sanfilippo reached on an infield single to second to give the Seahawks a pair of runners on. Sabido drove the ball to the deepest part of right field as Joe Emerson snagged it, which allowed Gillen to tag up and score.

The visitors tied the game in the top half of the second. Back-to-back walks of Daubon and Farruggio started the rally. Anthony Porrino sacrificed both runners over before Emerson drove in Daubon with an RBI single to right. Sacred Heart nearly went up 2-1 but Schneider fired a strike to home plate as Melfi was able to apply the tag to the sliding Farruggio, keeping the game tied at 1-1.

SHU broke the tie in the top of the fifth as Markmann homered to left, scoring Justin Levito, who led off the stanza with a single up the middle, making it 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers. The visitors added one more in the seventh, after Daubon doubled to left cent to plate home Jordan.

Wagner cut the deficit to 4-2 as Melfi led off the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of the season to left-center field. The Seahawks found some momentum, as Ruggiero singled and Lutz drew a walk. SHU's Brendan Coffey settled in and retired Ethan Valdez and Gillen to end the frame.

The final tally came in the top of the eighth, as the Pioneers increased the lead to three, 5-2. With one out, Emerson and Joey Skarad walked. Kevin Wiseman settled back in, recording his second strikeout of the inning, Levito, swinging, for the second out. Jordan was ahead of the count, 2-1, before looping a single to center and moving to second on a fielding error by Gillen as Emerson came around to score.

Wagner staged a late rally. Ruggiero clubbed his third hit of the game, sending a hard-hit ball towards second. Valdez kept it going, lofting a single to left field. Coffey was able to get Gillen to ground out to short to end the ballgame.

Chase Jeter earned the win for SHU, going 5.1 innings in which he allowed one run on four hits, walking one, and striking out seven batters. Coffey notched his fourth save of the year, going the final 3.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Pat Gallagher took the loss after going 4.2 innings, in which he allowed three runs on three hits. He walked six and struck out six. Nicholas Hanson didn't allow a run in his 1.1 innings of work. Wiseman went two full innings, recording four strikeouts despite allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. Mike Pirrotta worked a scoreless ninth.

Ruggiero led Wagner with three hits in the second game of Saturday's twin-bill; Gillen added two hits.

Wagner hits the road to open the month of April as the Seahawks will travel to Smithfield, RI to tangle with Bryant April 1-3.
