Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team captured its first victory of the season, besting Northeast Conference (NEC) foe Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Monday afternoon.
The Green & White, who outshot the Pioneers, 14-9, went ahead 1-0 on junior
Agustina Deharbe's first Seahawk goal as she entered the circle and fired a shot into the bottom right corner just five minutes into the first quarter.
Sacred Heart would respond quickly, as Julia Chang netted her first goal of the season less than two minutes later. However, the scoring slowed from there as both defenses settled in. The Wagner defense in particular stood out, not allowing another shot on goal for the rest of half, sending the teams into the locker room tied 1-1.
The second half started slowly, similar to the end of the first. However, that was abruptly changed as junior
Julia Cruces Pastorino received a pass and dribbled herself into the circle and fired a shot into the net. Her first Wagner goal gave the Seahawks their second and ultimately final lead of the day.
The Green & White's defense stood strong through the final 23 minutes, while
reigning NEC Rookie of the Week
Erin Franklin made three saves to keep the Pioneers from equalizing. The final rung with the Seahawks still leading 2-1.
The win improves Wagner's record to 1-1 (1-0 NEC) while Sacred Heart falls to 0-3 (0-2) on the season.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to North Andover, MA to face off against the Merrimack Warriors on Thursday, March 25 at 1:00 PM.
