Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team will finish the regular season this Tuesday and Wednesday, as the Seahawks are scheduled to take on Merrimack at the Spiro Sports Center. Tip-off on Tuesday is set for 7:00 pm, while Wednesday's contest is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
Postseason Scenarios
As of today, the Seahawks are going to enter the Northeast Conference (NEC) tournament as the #1 or #2 seed. With two wins this week against Merrimack, the Seahawks will host Mount St. Mary's as the #1 seed. A split against the Warriors this week will result in a matchup with Sacred Heart as the #2 seed on Saturday at the Spiro Sports Center. In a third scenario, Wagner will host Mount St. Mary's as the #2 seed in the semifinal game on Saturday. Game times have not been announced yet.
Morales Earns Another Weekly Honor
Senior
Alex Morales was named the NEC Player of the Week on Monday. Morales becomes the only player in the NEC to win the league's weekly honor four times this season. The senior once again showed why he is among the conference's top players by averaging 24.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, four assists, and four steals per game in Wagner's split against Central Connecticut last week. He is one of just two players nationwide this season to post at least 20/10/7/4 in a game. Morales ranks in the NEC top-10 in scoring (17.6, third), rebounding (7.4, eighth), assists (4.5, second) and steals (1.8, sixth).
Historic Streak
Even though Wagner's 10-game winning streak came to an end last week, the Seahawks re-wrote the record books in the process. The 10-game streak was the longest by an NEC team since LIU reeled off 13 straight victories during the 2010-11 campaign and longest by the Seahawks since a 16-game streak under PJ Carlesimo in 1978-79.
Wagner also became one of just 11 NEC teams over the past 25 years to string together at least 10 consecutive wins.
Hunt Continues His Case For Rookie Of The Year
Earlier this season, freshman
DeLonnie Hunt became the first freshman since LIU's E.J. Reed during the 2012-13 season to win the NEC's Rookie of the Week award three consecutive times.
Hunt reached double digits in nine of his last 11 games to lift his scoring average from 7.3 ppg to 11.0 ppg. Last week the NEC's leading freshman scorer contributed 11.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 4.5 apg in the split with CCSU.
Ford Among The Nation's Best
Senior
Elijah Ford is among the nation's top players in field goal percentage. Ford, who is second in the conference at 17.9 points per game, ranks 13
th in the nation in field goal percentage, converting 60.1% of his shots.
Dominating The Glass
As a team, the Seahawks are attacking the offensive glass, ranking among the top teams in the country. Wagner leads the way in the NEC at 34.4 percent to rank 23rd nationally.
Scouting The Warriors
Merrimack comes into the series with a 9-7 record. The Warriors, who are ineligible for the postseason due to their transition from Division II to Division I, have lost three of their last four games.
