Softball Sweeps Lafayette For Undefeated Opening Weekend

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College softball team earned two dominant victories over Lafayette on Sunday, giving the Seahawks a perfect 4-0 start to the 2021 season.
 
In game one, the Seahawks earned their third shutout win of the season with an 11-0 victory, before taking game two by a score of 12-4.

Similar to yesterday's sweep against Colgate, a dominant pitching performance led the way for the Seahawks.
 
Junior Eve Harvey pitched four scoreless innings and only allowed two hits, before junior Kayla Hooks tossed a perfect fifth inning to lead the Seahawks to a third consecutive shutout victory.
 
The Seahawks got on the board in the first inning, as graduate student Zoe Bender scored on an error to make it 1-0 and extended the lead on a Mackenzie Vogler single. 
 
In the second inning, RBI singles by freshman Keeghan Ward and senior Alexis Silinonte gave the Seahawks a 6-0 lead.
 
Graduate student Amelia Van Orman continued her strong start to the season with an RBI single in the third, before Ward picked up her second RBI of the season to push the lead to 8-0.
 
In the fourth inning, RBI hits by sophomores Haley Peaslee and Bianca Worthy extended the lead to 11-0, giving Wagner the victory.
 
Ward led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Bender scored three runs to lead the Green and White

Zoe Bender once again served as the catalyst for the Seahawk offense, scoring four runs on four hits in game two, scoring seven total runs in both games.
 
In the first inning, the graduate student led off with a triple and scored on error, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead.
 
Lafayette tied the game in the second inning and took a 4-1 lead in the third, but the Seahawks answered right back to re-gain the lead, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the third on RBIs by Worthy, Van Orman, junior Natalie Del Ponte, and junior Makenzie Miller to make it 6-4 Wagner.
 
In the fourth inning, another RBI by Van Orman scored Bender, before a two-run single by Ward extended the lead to 9-4.
 
The Seahawks ended the game in the fifth on RBI singles by Bender and Van Orman, giving Wagner the 12-4 victory.
 
In the circle, junior Kayla Hooks, freshman Scarlett Lloyd, and Van Orman combined for the win.
 
The Seahawks will open Northeast Conference (NEC) play at Merrimack on March 20 and 21.
