Soaring Seahawks Extend Winning Streak To Six Straight With 62-58 Home Win Over St. Francis Brooklyn

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's basketball team was able to withstand a late scare and kept its winning streak intact, earning a 62-58 home victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Friday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.

Wagner (7-2; 7-1 NEC) upped its winning streak to six games by placing four players in double-figures.

Junior Emilija Krista Grava led the way with a team-high 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field while pulling down a team-best six rebounds. Senior Khaleah Edwards netted 15 points, nine of which coming from three-point range. 

Freshman guard Marisa Sanchez-Henry scored a career-high 12 points off-the-bench, shooting 4 of 6 from the field while hitting on all three of her attempts from three-point range. Fellow newcomer, Zhaneia Thybulle, rounded out the scoring, netting 11 points and dished out seven assists in the victory. 

St. Francis Brooklyn (2-8; 2-8 NEC) had three players score in double-figures. Alyssa Fisher led all scorers with a game-high 18 points while Nevena Dimitrijevic, who was one of five Terriers to not score in yesterday's contest, netted 12 points to go along with a team-best four assists. Fruzsina Horvath chipped in 11 points and five rebounds for the visitors. 
 
Inside the Box Score...
  • Wagner's six-game winning streak is the longest since the 1997-98 season, when, the Seahawks, under then-head coach, Pam Roecker, rattled off an impressive six-game win streak from February 14 through their championship run before falling in the finals on March 7 to Saint Francis U. 
  • Wagner, the Northeast Conference (NEC) leader in three-point field goal defense, held St. Francis Brooklyn to just 25.0 shooting from beyond-the-arc.
  • The Seahawks turned 23 St. Francis Brooklyn turnovers into 24 points while St. Francis Brooklyn scored 28 points off 21 Wagner mishaps.
  • The Terriers out-rebounded Wagner, 37-31, on the glass, which included a 13-7 edge on the offensive boards.
How It Happened…
First Quarter
  • Both teams traded baskets over the opening half of the quarter as Ally Lassen's layup gave the visitors a slim 9-7 advantage
  • After Krista Grava tied the game at nine, St. Francis Brooklyn scored five of the final nine points in the quarter, as they led 14-13 after one period of play. 
Second Quarter
  • Fisher opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a jumper that pushed SFBK ahead by three before Kem Nwabudu was able to knock down the mid-range jumper that cut the visitors lead to one, 16-15. 
  • The Terriers staged an 8-3 run in taking its largest lead of the ballgame, 24-18, as Lassen was able to convert from the paint. 
  • Wagner seized the momentum away from St. Francis Brooklyn, erupting on a 13-1 run over the final 3:33, capped off by a long-range three-pointer from Sanchez-Henry that gave the Seahawks a six-point lead, 31-25, heading into halftime

Third Quarter
  • The halftime break didn't seem to slow down the Seahawks, as Edwards scored the opening five points, forcing SFBK to call a timeout as the lead jumped to 11 and the run ballooned to 18-1 over six minutes. 
  • Lassen was able to put a stop to the Wagner run with a put-back layup at the 6:16 mark, which ignited the Terriers, as they responded in the form of a 7-0 that cut into the lead, 36-32 after Dimitrijevic made the backend of a two-shot foul. 
  • Thybulle was the catalyst to Wagner's 8-2 run that saw the lead once again hit double-figures, 44-34, as Sanchez-Henry capped the run with 1 of 2 from the charity stripe. 
Fourth Quarter
  • Fisher continued her torrid shooting, opening the fourth quarter with St. Francis Brooklyn's first five points in the stanza that made it a one-possession game, 44-41, at the 7:23 mark. 
  • Krista Grava was able to complete the traditional three-point from the free-throw line that pushed the lead back to six before adding a baseline jumper from the right side that made it 49-41 with 6:24 showing on the clock. 
  • St. Francis Brooklyn continued to chip away at the Wagner lead, outscoring the Seahawks, 14-7, over the next 4:20, as found themselves trailing by just one, 56-55, with 2:04 to go in regulation. 
  • Following an offensive foul by Dimitrijevic, Krista Grava spun away from her defender and connected on a fadeaway jumper the gave Wagner a 58-55 lead with 1:13 left to play. 
  • Fisher was fouled with 43 seconds and missed the first before making the second, closing the gap to just two, 58-56. 
  • After Wagner called for time, Thybulle was able to create enough space from her defender and hit on the jumper that gave the home team a 60-56 lead with just 16 seconds remaining. 
  • Lassen was fouled and made both her attempts that narrowed the Wagner lead even further, but, Edwards, was able to seal the game with a pair from the line as Wagner moved to 7-1 in league play and earn its sixth straight win.

  • The Seahawks will remain at home for its next series, as the Green & White welcomes the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers in a pivotal matchup on Tuesday, February 9, and Wednesday, February 10.
