Women's Basketball Picks Up Fifth Straight Win

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's basketball team ran their winning streak to five straight with an 62-51 home victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon at the Spiro Sports Center.  Wagner (6-2; 6-1 NEC) won their fifth conference game in a row by placing three players in double-figures and 52 percent shooting performance from the floor.

Juniors Kem Nwabudu and Emilija Krista Grava each stuffed the box score for the Seahawks with a team-high 15 points apiece on a combined 14 of 23 shooting from the floor while grabbing 14 rebounds, led by Krista Grava's team-high nine. Each had two blocks in the contest with Nwabudu dishing out four helpers.

Senior Khaleah Edwards added 13 points on an efficient 4 of 8 shooting performance from the floor, which included a perfect 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in her 26 minutes of action.

St. Francis Brooklyn (2-7; 2-7 NEC) had two players score in double-figures, led by Ally Lassen, who netted a game-high 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor. Alyssa Fisher added 11 points.

How It Happened…
First Quarter
  • Both teams couldn't find their rhythm early in the contest, as Wagner opened the contest shooting 5 of 15 while SFBK was held to just 4 of 12.
  • The Terriers scored the first four points in the contest before the Seahawks went on a 12-3 run over the next seven minutes in building a 12-7 advantage. Wagner was able to hit on 5 of 10 from the floor while holding the Terriers to just one made basket in seven chances.
Second Quarter
  • A 10-4 spurt by the Seahawks over a near four-minute span upped the home team's advantage to 22-13, as Edwards capped the run with a three-pointer off-the feed from Amanda Pollard.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn responded by scoring nine of the next 13 points over the next three minutes, trimming Wagner's lead to just four, 26-22, as Fisher was able to convert from the outside.
  • The Green & White concluded the frame with seven of the final 11 points in taking a 33-26 halftime lead
  • Wagner shot a blistering 69.2 percent from the field (9 of 13) in the quarter as Edwards paved the way with seven points in the period.
  • The Terriers were able to keep pace, thanks to converting 8 of 9 from the from free-throw in the second quarter, as Fisher was the St. Francis Brooklyn catalyst, matching Edwards with seven points.
Third Quarter
  • The visitors were able to trim the deficit down to eight, 39-31, midway through the frame, before Wagner went up by 12, 43-31, with 2:43 left to go in the period following a LaNiya Miller layup.
  • A 7-2 run by the Terriers to conclude the third quarter brought the visitors to within seven, 45-38, as Fisher was once again able to hit from the outside.
Fourth Quarter
  • In the final quarter of action, the Terriers opened with five of the first nine points in the frame, as Wagner saw its lead down to 49-43 in the opening minutes.
  • The Seahawks responded with a 10-2 run over the next six minutes in taking its largest lead of the game, a 14-point advantage, as Wagner was ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn, 59-45, following a pair of made free-throws from Alayshia Dailey.
  • St. Francis Brooklyn closed the contest with six of the final nine points as Wagner won its fifth straight contest and sixth overall.
