Newark, NJ – For the first time since November 3, 2019, when the Wagner College women's soccer team finished its 2019 season, the Seahawks will make the short trek to Newark, NJ to tangle with the NJIT Highalnders at Lubetkin Field at Mal Stadium to open up the 2021 spring season.
 
OPENING KICK...
  • The Wagner College women's soccer team begins its 28th season of NCAA Division I play on Sunday. 

SEAHAWK BREAKDOWN...
  • Wagner was picked fifth in the 2020-21 Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason coaches' poll.
  • Casella welcomes ten newcomers to the mix this season. 
  • Also new to Grymes Hill is Jenna Bracken, who will serve as assistant coach this season after completing a stellar four-year collegiate career at Kutztown University. 


SEASON'S GREETINGS:
  • All-time, Wagner is 4-21-2 in season openers.
  • The Seahawks' last victory on opening day came back on August 23, 2013, when the Green & White traveled to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Saint Peter's, and defeated the Peacocks, 3-1, in Jersey City. 

ALL-TIME AGAINST NJIT:
  • The Seahawks and Highlanders will be meeting for the tenth time in program history, with Wagner leading the head-to-head matchup, 6-3. 
  • The last time these two teams met was back on on September 15, 2017 at Hameline Stadium. The Highlanders blanked the Seahawks, 2-0. 

ABOUT NJIT:
  • NJIT was picked to finish seventh in the America East preseason coaches' poll. 
  • After going 7-8-3 and 3-4-1 in the Atlantic Sun, this season marks the first year that NJIT is competing in the America East. 
  • The Highlanders return 20 players from that 2019 team, inlcuding ASUN Second Team honoree, Siani Magruder, ASUN All-Freshman and All-Tournament team selection, Molly Saylor and fellow All-Tournament choice, Nicole Loehle. 
  • NJIT is 1-0 after earning a 3-1 home victory over Drexel back on Feb. 21. The Highlanders are scheduled to play La Salle on Thursday afternoon. 
UP NEXT:
  • The Seahawks will head out to Philadelphia, PA on Friday, March 5, as they will take on the Drexel University Dragons.
  • Kickoff is set for noon.
