Cruces Pastorino’s Late Goal Lifts Field Hockey To 2-1 Victory Over Rider



Staten Island, NY –
The Wagner field hockey team captured its third Northeast Conference (NEC) victory on the season, defeating Rider, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

The Green & White outshot the Broncs 3-1 in the opening frame and held the visitors to zero corner opportunities. The Seahawks had two corner opportunities and converted on their second opportunity. Julia Cruces Pastorino fired a shot that was blocked by a rider defender and the ball ended up on senior Laura Van Hamburg's stick as she fired a shot past Rider netminder Brooke Golbeski.
 
The second quarter was a battle for both teams as Rider outshot the Seahawks 2-0, senior netminder Daisy Ruhle tallied one save in the quarter to keep the Green & White ahead going into the half. Both teams tallied three shots in the first half and Wagner held the advantage in corner penalty opportunities and shots on goal.

The contest opened up in the third stanza, Rider tallied four shots and two found the cage. The Broncs tied the game when Julia Divorra fired a shot past Daisy Ruhle to tie the game late in the third quarter. The Green & White had just two shots in the third quarter while one found the cage.

Both teams entered the final quarter on the offensive, the teams combined for 10 shots and eight corner penalty opportunities, the Seahawks forced Brooke Golbeski to make three saves in the final frame. Kira Mordvinov drew a penalty stroke with 2:51 remaining in the contest. Julia Cruces Pastorino stepped up to take the stroke as she converted her fourth game winning goal of the season to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead late in the contest.
 
With time running out, Rider made one last push gaining two penalty corners in the final 60 seconds, freshman Liselotte Koop made two defensive saves in the final minute to preserve the victory for Wagner.

Julia Cruces Pastorino led the Seahawks with five shots and three shots on target while senior Agustina Deharbe had three shots and two on net. Netminder Daisy Ruhle stopped two shots in the win.
 
The Seahawks will travel to Sacred Heart on Sunday evening for their final road trip of the 2021 season, the contest is set to begin at 7:00 P.M.
