Women's Tennis Defeats St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-3, For First NEC Win

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team picked up earned its first Northeast Conference (NEC) win of the season, as the Seahawks defeated the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. 

The Green & White took two of three in doubles to pick up the first point of the match. 

Fidan Khalilzade and Samantha Lugtu defeated the Terriers pair of Gayathri Rajesh and Valentine Mudry, 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Gabrielle Perraudin and Tara Dakic edged out the duo of Marghertia Fiorio and Yeva Baziv, 7-5.

Lugtu put Wagner ahead 2-0 in the overall match as she earned a 6-0; 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Rajesh. 

St. Francis Brooklyn got on the board as Baziv was able to pick up a 6-1; 6-0 victory at No. 5. The Seahawks rattled off two straight wins that sealed the match as Perraudin bested Mia Skrbinsek, 6-1; 6-2 while Khalilzade was able to withstand Fiorio, 7-5; 6-3 at No. 1.

Paula Ysabelle Yu was pitted in a back-and-forth tilt at No. 6 against Mudry. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Yu was able to rally back with a 7-5 winner in the second set. In the third and deciding set, Mudry picked up the win for the visitors, 10-6. St. Francis Brooklyn claimed the win at No. 3 by default. 

Wagner wraps up its fall season on Saturday, October 23, as they will head to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on Rider.
