Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Finale At Iona

New Rochelle, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team (5-8-0) fell to the Iona College Gaels (6-7-0), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

This was the final regular season non-conference game for the Green & White.

FIRST HALF
  • Iona got on the board first in the 6th minute of play as Kate McNally was able to receive the pass from Katherine Benson and put a low-right strike that got past Wagner junior keeper, Erin Kelly.
  • Five minutes later, the Seahawks had a chance as Kylie McNally delivered a low-lining kick that found the arms of Sam Rom.
  • With ten minutes to go before intermission, Kayla Barbosa, who recorded her first collegiate goal against Bryant on Thursday, sent the free-kick towards the right as goalkeeper Sam Rom was able to deny the scoring chance.
  • The Gaels tried to push its lead in the 32nd as Taylor D'Alessandro booted the ball that found the waiting arms of Kelly, keeping it a one score game.
  • On the next Wagner possession, Caitlin Filja was able to locate the loose ball just inside the box and send one on goal, but Rom was there for the stop.

SECOND HALF
  • The visitors came out with the early momentum, as two minutes into the second half, Emma Roe drilled a shot attempt that hit the crossbar and trickled out of play.
  • Following a throw-in by the Seahawks, Filja found herself in a prime position for a scoring chance but Caroline Scott, who replaced Rom, halted the opportunity.
  • With ten minutes left in regulation, Katherine Benson looked to add to Iona's total but Wagner freshman goalkeeper, Sam Hughes, stepped up for the stop, keeping it a 1-0 contest.
  • The Gaels eventually pushed across their second goal of the match as Mia Lopez was credited with the goal on the assist from Kedarjah Lewis and Kiera Haggerty to make it 2-0.
  • McNally had the Seahawks final chance, as settled the corner kick but her shot went to the right of the net.
