Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Edged By Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1, In Double Overtime On Thursday Evening

Staten Island, NY – Junior forward Madison Carr notched her team-leading seventh goal in response to the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights scoring the game's first goal.

The contest remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the 104th minute when FDU's Aitana Martinez-Montoya netted home the golden goal as the Seahawks dropped Thursday's night Northeast Conference (NEC) tilt, 2-1, in double overtime.

FIRST HALF
  • Wagner was off to a fast start in this one, as three minutes into the fixture, senior tri-captain Luisa Barone headed a shot that hit the crossbar.
  • On the next Seahawk possession, fellow captain, Annie White, found space in the Knights' defense and booted a shot that found the waiting arms of the keeper, Malene Nielsen.
  • Midway through the stanza, White once again tested Nielsen, as she received the ball from freshman Emma Roe on the right side and curled it on goal, but Nielsen was able to make the save.
  • On FDU's next possession, the visitors were able to get a corner kick. Madelyn Robbins stepped into the attempt as the ball found the foot of Naemi Hausen, who put it past Wagner freshman goalkeeper, Sam Hughes, for the game's first goal.
  • The Seahawks nearly responded following the restart as sophomore Kayla Barbosa launched a shot attempt off the free kick on the right side but her chance was turned aside by Nielsen.
  • The home team continued to apply the pressure and was rewarded in the 34th minute.
  • Roe was able to receive the feed and head the ball on target as Wagner was then awarded a corner.
  • Senior Gabby Cipriano sent one into the box, where a slew of players from both sides converged in the box.
  • Carr was able to settle the ball and fire one out of the reach of Nielsen as the Seahawks tied the game at 1-1.
  • Wagner carried that momentum as junior Renata Djuravecevic nearly gave the Green & White the lead with her chance, but, Nielsen was able to make the save on that scoring opportunity.

SECOND HALF
  • When play resumed for the second half, the Knights came out of the break on the move.
  • Hausen had two of her attempts blocked, as did Robbins, as the Seahawk defense stepped in front of each attempt.
  • One of the pivotal moments of the game came in the 50th minute as Hausen was looking for her second goal of the match, sending one to the top part of the net.
  • Hughes was able to keep the score knotted at 1-1, as she made a tremendous leaping save to her right to redirect the shot away from the goal.
  • Carr was looking for the potential game-winner and nearly had it in the 78th minute as Wagner was on the 2-on-1 breakaway but was stopped by Nielsen.
  • In the final five minutes of regulation, the Seahawks put together a quartet of opportunities as Djuravecevic's header nearly sealed the deal but ricocheted off the post.
  • White tracked down the loose ball and immediately sent on net but Nielsen was once again there for the stop as both teams got set for overtime.

OVERTIME
  • The Knights had the lone shot of the first overtime session as Robbins kicked one high over the goal.
  • Two minutes, the Knights earned a corner, but could not create a chance off the set piece.
  • Robbins was able to steal the ball away from and alertly spot her teammate, Martinez-Montoya, who came racing in and fired one to the bottom right of the net, just past a diving Hughes, for the game-winner.
