Wagner Defeats Marist, 10-9, In 12 Innings On Schneider's Walk-Off Single

The Wagner College baseball team trailed 9-5 heading into the ninth before staging a four-run rally to tie the game and ultimately, in the bottom of the 12th getting the walk-off single from reigning Co-Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, senior Griffin Schneider, as the Seahawks defeated Marist, 10-9, in the second game of the East Tennessee State Baseball Tournament. 

Schneider went 1 for 4 with two runs scored in addition to drawing three walks.  Freshman Cody Bey and senior Tyler Sanfilippo each had multi-hit performances, led by Bey, who had three hits and scored thrice in the victory. Sanfilippo added two hits. Senior Freddy Sabido and sophomore Johnny Kampes, who tied the game in the ninth, each had two RBI. 

Senior right-hander Ryan Lauk was masterful on the mound this afternoon, throwing six scoreless innings while carrying a no-hitter until the top of the fifth. The Mullica Hill, NJ native struck out a career-high ten batters. Junior Nick LePre earned his first victory of 2020, throwing 4.2 frames without allowing a run on two hits while striking out three. 

Donnie Stone was one of three Red Foxes that drove in two RBI as he led the way for Marist with two hits. Tyler Kapruscinski and Gene Napolitano joined Stone with two RBI on the afternoon. 

Erubiel Candelario went five innings for Marist, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out six. Will Van Beusekom, who gave up the game-winner to Schneider, was saddled with the loss after going 2.1 innings despite walking two and striking out six batters. 

Candelario matched Lauk over the first three innings before Wagner scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Bey reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher before moving up on the throwing error. Schneider drew a one-out walk before Sanfilippo singled to right-center in putting Wagner on the board. With two outs, junior Mike Ruggiero plated home Schneider on an RBI single. 

Momentum was on the side of the Seahawks, striking for three more in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead, 5-0, Bey reached on a dropped fly by the first baseman which allowed AJ Medrano to cross the plate before Sabido cleared the bases with a two-run single to center. 

Following a scoreless sixth, Marist erupted for six runs of their own in taking its first lead of the game, 6-5. The Red Foxes sent a total of 13 men to the plate in the frame. Marist got their first two runs in the inning on a free pass before Wagner went to the bullpen. 

Kevin Wiseman, who replaced Nick Zuppe, gave up an RBI single to Stone. A walk to Kapruscinski plated home the third run before Napolitano sent a sacrifice fly to center in tying the game and Amory collected the eighth walk in the inning as Marist went ahead by one. 

The Red Foxes tacked on insurance runs in the eighth, scoring three more times in building a 9-5 lead. Stone doubled to the left that brought in a run and a batter later, Kapruscinski singled to right that pushed across the second run of the inning while Napolitano followed up with an RBI sacrifice bunt. 

The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when Wagner rallied to tie the game at 9-9. With two outs, Zane Kmietek preceded to walk the bases loaded which brought up a replacement in Wyatt Duncan.  Duncan reached on a throwing error by the Marist 2B, which scored Sanfilippo. The next batter, Kampes, ripped a single to center that brought in two more runs as Wagner tied the game at 9-9.

oth teams were deadlocked until the 12th. With two outs via strikeouts, Bey and Sabido both walked. With the count at 1-1, Schneider connected on a single which sent the Seahawk bench into jubilation. 

The Seahawks close out the tournament on Sunday afternoon against Ohio at noon.
