Hannah Lewis delivered the go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning as part of a four-RBI performance to lead the Wagner College softball team to a wild 11-10 victory over Drexel on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Wagner evens its overall record at 3-3, while the Dragons fall to 1-5 on the season.
The second game of today's doubleheader between Wagner and UMBC was cancelled due to inclement weather.
After Drexel took a 6-0 lead in the first inning, Wagner clawed back into the contest, as reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Co-Player of the Week
Kaila Smith connected on her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field, to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Wagner then used a big third inning to take the lead, a RBI singles by freshman
Bianca Worthy and Smith, an RBI double by Lewis, an RBI single by sophomore
Penelope Russ, and an RBI single by senior
Zoe Bender plated a total of seven runs to give Wagner a 9-6 advantage.
The Dragons knotted the score at 9-9 in the top of the fourth inning, before Lewis delivered another RBI single that scored senior
Christina Harkins to give Wagner at 10-9 lead.
Drexel once again tied the game in the top half of the sixth inning, before the Seahawks sealed the win in the bottom half of the frame.
After Smith was hit by a pitch, senior
Kyleigh Norris drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Two batters later and with two outs in the inning, Lewis delivered her third go-ahead hit of the contest, an RBI single through the left side, to score the winning run.
In the circle, freshman
Madison Ferrao earned her first collegiate victory after pitching four innings in relief of sophomore
Eve Harvey and senior
Amelia Van Orman.
Ferrao allowed just one run over the final four innings while striking out two.
The Dragons held a 13-12 advantage in hits throughout the contest.
Lewis led Wagner with three hits, while Smith delivered three RBIs on two hits.Â
The Hampton Invitational continues tomorrow, with the Seahawks taking on Binghamton and Hampton, starting at 10 am.
