Seahawks Fall At Fordham On Wednesday Afternoon

Bronx, NY - The Wagner College baseball team held a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth before the Fordham Rams responded in trimming the Seahawks lead to one in their half of the fourth and later erupting for six scores over the next two frames as the Seahawks dropped an 11-5 decision on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics...
  • Records - Wagner (6-8) | Fordham (10-6)
  • Series History - Fordham leads 33-9-1

Freshman Cody Bey, who was named Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week earlier today, paved the way for the Seahawks offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBI.  Classmate AJ Medrano went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Fellow newcomer, Henry Martinez, contributed the other RBI for Wagner in going 1 for 4 at the dish today.

S
tarter Nick DeCarlo went four innings in giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits. Junior Nick LePre took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits in his 1.1 innings of work.

C.J. Vazquez had three hits while Nick LaBella and Matt Tarabek, who each finished with two hits, drove in two RBI apiece in leading the Rams' offense on the afternoon. Garrett Crowley worked 1.2 scoreless innings in picking up the win as he struck out four Seahawks.

How It Happened...
Wagner scored twice in the top of the third inning. Eric Lauk led off with a bunt single up the third baseline. Medrano singled to center giving the Seahawks a pair of runners. Martinez crushed a ground-rule double down the right-field line that brought in Lauk for the game's first run. Bey sent a hotshot to short that plated Wagner's second run of the inning. Fordham got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Jake MacKenzie doubled to right-center to bring in Jason Coules.

The Seahawks erupted for three runs in the fourth in taking a 5-1 lead. Junior Mike Ruggiero worked a two-out walk to start the rally. Lauk followed with a free pass of his own before Medrano pelted an infield single to second base in bringing home Ruggiero.  Martinez was hit by a pitch that gave the visitors runners on first and second. Bey stepped in and promptly cleared the bases with a single through the right side to extend the lead to four, 5-1.  The Rams matched Wagner with three runs in their half of the inning in trimming the deficit to one, 5-4.

Tarabek brought in a pair on a two-run single up the third baseline that made it 5-3 before Jake Baker walked but the ball went to the backstop as Tarabek came in to score. Fordham got the tying run in the bottom of the fifth on an Alvin Melendez sacrifice-fly to center. The Rams carried that momentum over to the sixth, scoring the go-ahead run on a Billy Godrick single to left before adding two more in building an 8-5 lead.

The Rams put the game away as Labella's connected on a two-run single before Fordham capped the six-run outburst with an RBI grounder by Andy Semo.
