Staten Island, NY -
With 29 seconds left in regulation, freshman guard Alex Cowan hit a baseline jumper that put Wagner ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson, 61-60, but, following a timeout, Rachael Niles rattled home a floater that turned out to be the game-winner as the Seahawks fell to the Knights, 62-61, Monday at the Spiro Sports Center.

Sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava, the reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Co-Player of the Week, finished with a game-best 24 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor (11 of 22) while coming one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing a team-best nine caroms in 38 minutes of action.  The Ligatne, Latvia native filled the stat sheet, concluding the contest with a career-high five assists while swiping a team-best two steals and adding a block.  Cowan also reached double digits, finishing with 11 points in 34 minutes of action.

Aniya Bell led three Knights in double digits, scoring 14 points off-the-bench while Maria Roters notched a double-double, finishing with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Lauren Francillon added 12 in 29 minutes of play while dishing out a team-best four helpers.

The Basics:
  • Records: Wagner (7-13; 3-6 NEC) | Fairleigh Dickinson (8-13; 5-5 NEC)
  • Series History: Fairleigh Dickinson leads the all-time series 39-35.

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • Krista Grava got the Seahawks on the board first with a jumper off the feed from junior guard Alayshia Dailey
  • FDU responded with a layup from Roters that knotted the game at 2-2.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth before senior forward Jordan Hobson hit a corner three that made it 7-6 at the 5:38 mark.
  • From that point, Wagner scored eight of the final 15 points in taking a 15-13 advantage.

Second Quarter
  • Similar to the start of the first quarter, Krista Grava got the scoring going for Wagner in quarter two, converting on a jumper that gave the Green & White a four-point edge, 17-13.
  • Francillon evened the contest at 17 on a jumper, following a pair of free-throws from Bell.
  • Krista Grava reached double-figures for the 13th time season at the 8:14 mark of the period, after receiving a pass from redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen, as Wagner led 19-17.
  • A near two and a half minute scoring drought from both teams followed before Jayde Boyd stepped back and converted from the outside only to have Hobson answer right back with her second three of the game as the Seahawk regained the lead, 22-20.
  • The Knights started to pull away on the heels of an 11-4 run, part of a larger 15-8 outburst over the final 4:47 of the frame as the visitors took a five-point lead, 35-30, into the break.

Third Quarter
  • Over the first two minutes of the third quarter, the Seahawks used an 8-4 run of their own to trim the deficit to one, 39-38, as Cowan was able to hit again.
  • The visitors built their largest lead of the contest, 50-42, at the 4:13 mark, after outscoring the Seahawks, 13-8, over a four-minute span.
  • The Seahawks were relentless in their comeback attempt, closing the quarter on a 6-0 run that saw the home team cut the deficit to just two, 50-48, after going 3 of 4 from the floor and holding FDU without a made field goal for the final 2:11 after Jackson beat the third quarter buzzer.

Fourth Quarter
  • Just 19 seconds came off the game clock before the Seahawks were able to knot the game at 50, thanks to Dailey, who hit on both chances from the free-throw line.
  • Francillon gave the visitors the lead once more, 53-50, after completing the traditional three-point play.
  • Dailey, who hit on all six trips to the charity stripe, brought the Green & White to within one, 53-52, with 7:03 left in regulation.
  • FDU upped the lead to six, 58-52, with 5:31 left, as Lindsey Mack drilled a three-pointer after getting the pass from Niles.
  • The Seahawks responded with a three-ball from Cowan before Bell was sent to the line, where she extended FDU's lead to five, 60-55.
  • Wagner continued to fight back, as junior Khaleah Edwards (8p, 7r, 2a) converted on her trip to the free-throw line with 3:11 left in regulation.
  • Freshman forward Katrice Jackson forced a steal on Bell and Krista Grava was the beneficiary, as her jumper saw the Seahawks down, 60-59, with just over two minutes to go and prompted a timeout from Fairleigh Dickinson.
  • FDU turned the ball over with 50 seconds left as Wagner called for time to advance the ball.
  • On the ensuing possession, Dailey missed on a driving layup but was able to secure the offensive rebound.
  • After the Seahawks were able to move the ball, Edwards drove the lane and spotted Cowan, who swished the baseline jumper just as an FDU defender was approaching, as the Seahawks regained the lead, 61-60, with 29 seconds left.
  • When play resumed following the Knights' timeout, FDU was able to work the ball around until it found the hands of Niles, who couldn't hit from the wing, but the loose ball was secured by Celia Carbonell.
  • When play commenced, the Knights inbounded the ball to Niles, who was able to drive left and rattle in the runner as the Knights took a 62-61 lead with 11 seconds left in the contest.
  • Cowan had a clear look from deep but her shot hit the back iron. Jackson was able to grab the offensive rebound and find a cutting Cowan, but her floater to beat the buzzer fell short as the Knights survived.

Inside The Numbers:
  • Both teams finished with 40 rebounds. Wagner finished one more defensive rebound better than FDU (25-24) while the Knights were one offensive rebound better than Wagner (16-15).
  • Wagner shot 53.3 percent from the field in the third quarter, outscoring the Knights, 18-15, and holding the visitors to just 28.6 percent shooting in the quarter.
  • Tonight's game marked the eighth time this season that the Seahawks have held the opposition to under 30.0 percent shooting from three-point range.
  • Additionally, the 18.5 percent shooting from deep by FDU is the third-lowest by an opponent (.059 at Bryant, .100 at Colgate).
  • The Seahawks were held to a season-low three made three-pointers.
  • Krista Grava eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the fifth time this season and has scored in double-figures in 13 games, which includes a streak of four straight.
  • Wagner has converted on 43 of its last 47 free-throws (91.4 percent) over its last three games.
