Wagner Clinches NEC Tournament Berth Despite Loss At LIU

Brooklyn, NY - The Wagner College women's basketball team saw its two-game win streak snapped on the road at LIU on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Sharks 66-52 at the Steinberg Wellness Center.  

Despite the setback, the Seahawks have qualified for the 2020 Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament, marking the second consecutive year under head coach Heather Jacobs that the Green & White will be in the postseason. 
 
 
For the third straight game, three Seahawks scored in double-figures on the afternoon, led by junior Khaleah Edwards, who posted her third double-double of the season, finishing with a team-high 16 points while pulling down a team-best ten rebounds. 
 
Sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava poured in 14 points while securing eight caroms in 31 minutes of action. Redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen tallied ten points to round out the scoring for the Seahawks. 
 
Three Sharks finished in double-figures led by 14 points from Shyla Sanford, who also dished out five assists in her 31 minutes of play. Jeydah Johnson netted 13 points and seven rebounds while Kiara Bell chipped in 10 points while corralling a team-best nine rebounds.

Playoff Scenario:
  • Wagner has clinched a Northeast Conference Tournament berth for the second straight season under Coach Jacobs. 
  • After games played this afternoon, Robert Morris (15-1) remains in first followed by Mount St. Mary's (14-2). 
  • Merrimack, who is 12-5 on the year, currently sits third but is ineligible for the postseason due to NCAA Reclassification regulations after moving up from Division II. 
  • Saint Francis U (9-8) moves into the third spot followed by a four-way tie for fourth between Fairleigh Dickinson (7-9), Sacred Heart (7-9), Bryant (7-9) and LIU (7-9). 
  • The Seahawks are one game out at 6-10. 
 
How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • The Sharks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before junior guard Alayshia Dailey soared past her defender en route to making the layup for Wagner's first points of the contest. 
  • The Seahawks took its first lead, 7-4, on a Mullen triple off the feed from freshman Alex Cowan
  • The two teams traded buckets before Sanford drilled a three-pointer that gave LIU a 12-11 advantage with 3:10 left in the quarter before Bell added a layup to up the lead to 14-11.
  • Wagner closed out the quarter with a 7-3 burst in claiming a 18-17 lead. 
 
Second Quarter
  • Both teams opened with jumpers to start the quarter as Krista Grava put Wagner back ahead, 20-19. 
  • The two teams were held without a made field goal until Edwards banked one off the window at the 6:51 mark as the visitors went up 22-19. 
  • The Sharks concluded the quarter on a 7-2 run in taking a 26-24 into the break. LIU held Wagner to just 1 of 9 shooting from the floor while misfiring on six attempts from the outside. 

Third Quarter
  • When play resumed for the third quarter, the Sharks took control of the tempo, erupting on a 25-0 run in building a 51-24 lead before Edwards score to stop the eight minute run. 
  • From Edwards basket, Wagner used an 8-2 burst to close the third quarter, going a perfect 3 of 3 from the floor while not allowing an attempt by the Sharks over the final minute.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Wagner was able to outscore LIU, 18-13, in the final period but it was not enough as the Sharks hung on for the 14-point victory. 
 
Inside The Boxscore:
  • Both teams shot over 50.0 percent in the opening quarter with Wagner converting on 57.1 percent from the floor (8 of 14) while LIU was at 50.0 percent (7 of 14).
  • During LIU's 27-10 third quarter, the Seahawks were held to just four made field goals while the Sharks converted on 10 of 17 from the floor and 4 of 5 from the outside. 
  • Of Wagner's 52 points, 34 of those came from inside-the-paint. 
  • LIU outrebounded Wagner, 42-37, despite Wagner holding a 12-9 edge on the offensive glass.
  • Wagner converted 16 points on the fast break. 
 
Next Up:
  • The Seahawks make their final regular season road trip of the year on Monday evening, traveling to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
