Women's Hoops Falls To Fairleigh Dickinson, 57-53, In Final Regular Season Road Tilt

Hackensack, NJ - The Wagner College women's basketball team trimmed a 15-point third quarter deficit down to five to start the fourth quarter but couldn't complete the comeback attempt as the Seahawks dropped its final road contest of the 2019-20 regular season at Fairleigh Dickinson, 57-53, on Monday evening from the Rothman Center. 

Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava led all scorers with 23 points while coming within one rebound shy of posting her third double-double of the season, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds. Junior guard/forward Khaleah Edwards netted nine points and five rebounds while redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen chipped in eight points and redshirt junior guard, Morgan Lenahan, contributed seven points and four rebounds off-the-bench. 

Lauren Francillon led the way for the Fairleigh Dickinson offense, recording a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. Maria Roters joined Francillon in double-figures with 12 points. Aniya Bell was one of four players with six points while matching Francillon with 10 caroms.

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • The Seahawks held a 7-4 lead before the Knights closed out the first quarter on a 18-2 run in taking a 22-9 lead.
  • The Knights converted on all six attempts from the field while limiting Wagner to just 1 of 6 down the stretch. 
 
Second Quarter
  • The Green & White came roaring back in the contest on the strength of a 19-7 outburst in cutting the game to 29-28, as Lenahan was able to connect from the corner. 
  • Krista Grava caught fire scoring 11 of her 15 first half points in the stanza while the Seahawks defense limited Fairleigh Dickinson, forcing the Knights to shoot 2 of 11 from the floor.
  • The Knights scored the final four points and entered the locker room with a 33-28 advantage. 

Third Quarter
  • The Knights opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run in building its largest lead of the contest, 43-28, after Roters converted in the paint. 
  • The Seahawks responded with a 10-2 outburst of its own in trimming the deficit to seven, 45-38, with 4:18 left, after Mullen drained corner triple. 
  • The two teams traded the final eight points with FDU clinging to a seven-point advantage, 49-42.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Lenahan opened the fourth with a pull up jumper that further cut into FDU's lead. 
  • The Knights went on a brief 7-2 run in reclaiming a ten-point lead, 56-46, with 4:28 remaining in the contest, as Bell was able to rattle on in the paint.
  • Wagner scored seven of the final eight points of the game, capped by a three-pointer from Edwards as time expired but it wasn't enough to overtake FDU who hung one for the four-point win. 
 
Inside The Boxscore:
  • After being outscored 22-9 after the first quarter, the Seahawks flipped the momentum to its favor, scoring 19 of the quarter's 30 points. 
  • Both teams finished with 20 caroms in the opening half, with the Seahawks outmuscling the Knights, 13-8, on the offensive end. 
  • Wagner converted 19 FDU turnovers into 21 points while capitalizing on second chance opportunities, outscoring the Knights, 18-9. 
  • Both teams netted 28 points from inside-the-paint while the FDU reserves outscored the Wagner bench, 16-8. 
  • The Knights held a 40-35 edge on the boards despite the Seahawks holding a 19-13 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • Krista Grava, who finished with 23 points, has now scored 20 or more points in nine games this season.
