Princeton, NJ – The No. 17-ranked Wagner women's water polo team had their seven-game winning streak finally come to an end on the final day of the Princeton Invitational, falling to the No. 18 Harvard Crimson, 9-6.
No. 17 Wagner 6, No. 18 Harvard 9: Game Sheet
After dropping their last matchup with the Seahawks, the Crimson attack came out firing, scoring five goals in the first eight minutes. The Wagner offense added three of their own scores to limit the damage, but after Harvard took a 2-1 lead a little over a minute into the game, the Green & White would never be able to knot it back up.
Sofia Diaz Alvarez,
Abbey Simshauser, and
Valeria Rojas each netted a single goal in the period, but five different Crimson swimmers would take them into the second period leading 5-3.
Harvard opened the scoring in the second period, extending their lead to 7-3, but
Jacqui Sjogren would cut the lead to three with her first goal of the day with only two seconds remaining in the half, sending the teams into the halftime break with Harvard leading 7-4.
Two Crimson goals to start the second half would close the door on a potential Seahawk comeback. Diaz Alvarez and Simshauser each notched another goal apiece to cut the deficit to three, but it wouldn't be enough as Harvard left the pool with the 9-6 victory.
The Green & White failed to take advantage of their man-up opportunities, as Harvard had double the amount of exclusions, 15-7. While both teams would score two advantage goals each, one of which was a 5-meter penalty for Harvard that gave them the 5-3 lead to end the first period.
