Men's Tennis Blanks College Of Staten Island, 7-0, For First Spring Victory

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College men's tennis team put together perhaps its most complete performance of the season, cruising to 7-0 shutout win over Staten Island (CSI) on Sunday evening.

For the Seahawks, it marked the first win for head coach Felipe Fuentes. 

The Green & White got the evening started with a dominant showing in doubles, as the pairing of Tejasvi Mehra and Hans Ohrner closed out an 8-1 win over Nikolozi Davlianidze and Mark Karpovas at second doubles. The duo of Siddharth Anand and Mohammed Hussain bested Tao Lin and Ivi Selencia, 8-2, to clinch the doubles point and send Wagner into singles with a 1-0 lead.

The Seahawks' momentum did not sway, as Anand defeated Davlianidze, 6-1; 6-0, at fifth singles, followed by newcomer Abhinav Magow shutting out Matthew Kotlyar in straight sets at sixth singles.  Omar Loutfy got past Karpovas, 6-2; 6-0, at fourth singles for Wagner's fourth straight win to seal the overall victory. 

INSIDE THE MATCH:
  • The pairing of team captain Dylan Walters and Loutfy got past Marcos Diaz and Niklas Koehne, 8-3
  • All three Seahawk newcomers (Magow, Loutfy and Mehra) collected their first collegiate singles wins
  • Walters and Ohrner continue to rack up singles victories, as both now stand at 43 career singles triumphs, tied for third on the all-time list behind former teammates, Charlton Boyd (75) and Eric Poland (52).
  • Walters, with his victory at No. 1 doubles with Loutfy, ranks fifth on the all-time career doubles wins list with 46, with former partner, Dale Sandy, in his sights, who finished his Seahawk tenure with 54 career doubles victories.
