Women's Basketball Drops Season Opener At Seton Hall

The Wagner College women's basketball team fell on the road Friday night, 96-53, to the Seton Hall University Pirates as the Seahawks opened their 2020-21 season. The Pirates move to 2-0 on the year. 
 
Junior Emilija Krista Grava and senior Khaleah Edwards each scored in double-figures with Krista Grava leading the way with 18 points, ten of which coming in the first quarter. The All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Team selection finished shooting 9 of 22 shooting from the field while grabbing four rebounds in her 38 minutes of action. 
 
Edwards contributed 13 points in 37 minutes of play. The London, England native corralled a team-leading six rebound and dished out a team-best four helpers on the evening. 
 
Tonight's contest saw the debut of three Seahawk newcomers. Freshman guard Marisa Sanchez-Henry logged 15 minutes in which she scored six points. Fellow first-year Seahawk, Ciara Brannon, netted three points, scoring her first career bucket at the 9:19 mark of the fourth quarter. Graduate transfer Kate Tokuhara, who earned the start, played 18 minutes and finished with four points and picked up three rebounds. 
 
 
Mya Jackson paved the way for Seton Hall, as she was one of four to score in double-digits, pouring in a game-high 27 points on 11 of 16 shooting from the field, which included a 4 of 7 shooting display from three-point range. Mya Bembry chipped in 14 points on a perfect 6 of 6 shooting from the field. 
 
Lauren Park-Lane added 13 points while dishing out six helpers and swiping three steals in 25 minutes. Amari Wright rounded out the double-figure performances, concluding the contest with 12 points in 16 minutes. Desiree Elmore grabbed a game-high nine caroms and distributed seven assists in the victory.

How It Happened…
 
First Quarter
  • Following Krista Grava's first basket of the new season, Seton Hall sparked a 7-0 run in taking a 9-2 lead before Sanchez-Henry recorded her first career point from the free-throw line. 
  • Seton Hall built up an 11-point advantage (18-7), after Bembry converted from the charity stripe with 3:07 left in the first. 
  • The visitors were resilient, outscoring the Pirates, 9-5, over the final 2:42 of the period in trimming the lead to just seven, 23-16. 

 
Second Quarter
  • Turnovers became a factor in the second for Wagner, committing five mishaps over a four-minute stretch in which Seton Hall turned into a 19-0 run in extending its lead to 42-16 before Sanchez-Henry was able to make one of two from the line. 
  • Over the final 4:36 of the quarter, Seton Hall outscored Wagner, 16-8, but the visitors were able to end the quarter with the first of two-buzzer beaters, as Krista Grava was able to connect on a turnaround jumper to beat the clock as both teams headed for the locker room.
 
Third Quarter
  • Both teams struggled in the open minutes of the frame before Edwards stopped the scoring drought with a layup.
  • The Pirates used a 16-2 outburst in taking a 74-31 lead before Sanchez-Henry was able to score back-to-back baskets to stifle the Pirates' momentum. 
  • Wagner outscored Seton Hall, 9-2, over the final three minutes in which the Green & White converted on 4 of 6 from the floor while limiting the Pirates to just one made basket. 
  • Edwards closed the quarter in dramatic fashion, locating the loose ball and putting up a half-court heave to beat the horn for the second time in the game. 
 
Fourth Quarter
  • In the early portion of the fourth, Brannon scored her first career points off a crafty dish from Edwards. 
  • From there, it was all Seton Hall in the fourth, building up to a 90-46 advantage, thanks to a 16-6 run over a near five minute run before 
  • The visitors scored seven of the final 13 points as Seton Hall capped off the win with a made free throw from Kaliah Harris.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Edwards and Krista Grava have now scored in double-figures 33 and 31 times, respectively, in their Seahawk careers. 
  • Junior guard Raven Pitt earned her first career start this evening, scoring four points and grabbing three boards in 23 minutes.
  • Wagner was outrebounded, 39-25.
  • Seton Hall scored 33 points off 25 Wagner turnovers.
  • The Seahawks outscored the Pirates, 11-7, in second-chance points
