Women's Basketball Falls To Mount St. Mary's, 78-63, In Northeast Conference (NEC) Opener

Emmitsburg, MD – Trailing by 12 at halftime, the Wagner College women's basketball team cut the Mount St. Mary's lead to seven with 5:45 remaining, but the comeback attempt was halted as the Seahawks fell to the Mountaineers, 78-63, on Thursday at Knott Arena in the Northeast Conference (NEC) opener for both teams. 

For the second straight game, three Seahawks finished in double figures, led by sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava, who finished with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field while grabbing a team-best six rebounds.

Junior guard Alayshia Dailey poured in 11 points as the Severn, MD native connected on 4-of-5 from the field in 32 minutes of action. Redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen was the third Seahawk to score in double-digits as she contributed ten points off-the-bench.

Senior Jordan Hobson ended the game with nine points and five rebounds to go along with two steals while junior Khaleah Edwards chipped in eight points, four rebounds and a team-leading four assists. 

Mount St. Mary's also had three go for double-figures, led by Jatarrikah Settle, who matched Krista Grava with a game-high 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting while tying for the team lead with eight caroms.

Michaela Harrison, an All-NEC Rookie Team selection a season ago, netted 14 points in 33 minutes of play while Kendall Bresee added 11 points, six rebounds and a game-best six assists in her 30 minutes of action.

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • After Mount's Rebecca Lee went 1-of-2 from the line, the Seahawks got back-to-back baskets from Edwards and Krista Grava.
  • The Mountaineers ignited an 11-2 run, taking a 12-6 lead at the 5:40 mark of the first before Dailey was able to stop the run.
  • After the Mount got the lead to five, 17-12, the Green & White responded with a pair of buckets from Mullen and freshman Drayah Heyward, which cut the lead Mount lead to one, 17-16, with 2:25 left to play in the first.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets to make it 19-19 before the home team scored five of the final seven points of the stanza, in clinging to a 24-21, thanks to a last-second shot by Dailey. 

Second Quarter
  • Edwards scored Wagner's first points of the second quarter that made it 26-23, but the Mount responded with a 6-0 run, building a nine-point advantage, 32-23, after Taylor Addison hit from inside the stripe, forcing a Seahawks' timeout. 
  • Freshman Katrice Jackson made the backend of her free throw attempt which brought the deficit down to eight, but the Mountaineers responded with a 13-1 run that increased the lead to 46-25 after Kayla Agentowicz buried one from the outside, that prompted a second Wagner timeout. 
  • Wagner answered back with 11 straight points that cut the Mount lead to ten, 46-36, with 1:10 to go before halftime as Krista Grava capped the run with a pair of freebies. 
  • Bresee's layup with 23 seconds on the clock was the final basket of the quarter as Mount went into the locker room with a 48-36 lead. 

Third Quarter
  • Over the first three minutes of the third, Wagner was able to trim into the Mount lead further, as a 10-4 spurt brought the visitors to within six, 52-46, after Edwards once again converted in the paint. 
  • Neither team would make another bucket until Settle made a running layup at the 4:44 mark.
  • Hobson made the second of her two free-throw attempts that again saw Wagner trail by seven, 54-47, but a three from Harrison with 25 ticks left in the quarter brought the Mount lead back into double-figures, 57-47. 

Fourth Quarter
  • The Seahawks scored six of the first nine points in the frame, closing the gap to seven once again, 60-53, after freshman Alex Cowan swished home both attempts from the line. 
  • Wagner couldn't get over that threshold, as Mount went back up by double-figures, extending its lead to 15 after Delaney Connors hit the backend of her two shots. 
  • Both teams split the final eight points of the game with Mount St. Mary's earning the first conference victory of the season. 

Inside The Numbers
  • Wagner shot 66.7 percent in the opening quarter while hitting 14 of its 21 points inside-the-paint with Mullen led the way for Wagner in the first with seven points. 
  • The Seahawks held the Mountaineers without a made field goal for over 4:35 minutes in the second quarter, while limiting the Mount to just two field-goal attempts.
  • In the third quarter, both teams combined to go 6-of-26 from the field and 2-of-12 from the outside. 
  • For the game, Wagner shot 41.1 percent from the field, scoring 34 of their 63 points from inside-the-paint.
  • The Seahawks were held to under 30.0 percent shooting from the outside (21.1%), their second-lowest three-point shooting performance this season. 
  • Wagner falls to 0-7 on the road this season.
