Women's Basketball Falters At Home Against Sacred Heart On Saturday Afternoon

Staten Island, NY- The Wagner College women's basketball team led by as many as ten points with 2:42 left in the third quarter but the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers closed the quarter on an 11-5 run, part of a larger 41-17 game-ending spurt that lifted SHU past the Seahawks, 79-65, on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Three Seahawks finished in double figures, led by forward Emilija Krista Grava's 18-point performance. The sophomore hit on 8-of-14 from the field in 25 minutes of action, coming within one rebound of her third double-double of the season, grabbing a team-high nine caroms. 
 
Junior guard Khaleah Edwards finished with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, which included a 3-of-5 mark from three-point range in her 38 minutes of action. The London, England native corralled six rebounds, five of which coming on the offensive glass. 
 
Senior Jordan Hobson added 13 points off-the-bench, also hitting on a trio of three-pointers in her 28 minutes of play. 
 
Four Pioneers finished the game scoring in double digits, led by Olivia Dabney, who recorded a double-double, as she finished the ballgame with a team-best 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while playing the full forty. 
 
Sonia Smith and Jayla Davis each had 16 points on a combing 8-of-20 shooting from the field. Adrianne Hagood, who entered play as the fourth leading scorer in the Northeast Conference (NEC), finished with 15 points. Carly Stroemel secured ten rebounds in 22 minutes of play.

 How It Happened:
 First Quarter
  • The Seahawks came out-of-the-gates on fire, building an 8-0 advantage after Edwards hit her second trifecta of the contest. 
  • Dabney put the visitors on the board with a three of her own before Krista Grava responded with a layup that made it 10-3. 
  • Over the next two minutes, SHU used an 8-0 in taking an 11-10 lead as Hagood hit from the outside. 
  • Freshman Katrice Jackson hit on both her attempts from the line that gave the Green & White the lead once again, 12-11, but the Pioneers ended the quarter with five unanswered, taking a 16-12 lead to the second.
 
Second Quarter
  • Early in the stanza, the Pioneers went ahead 21-14 following a three by Smith. 
  • Wagner came charging back on the strengths of a 14-6 run over a five-minute span that saw the Seahawks retake the lead, 28-27, thanks to a Hobson triple. 
  • Edwards put a bow on the quarter as she completed a three-point play as Wagner headed into the break with a 31-27 lead. 

 
Third Quarter
  • The visitors opened the third scoring seven of the first ten points in the period as they knotted the game at 34 following a triple from Allyson Murphy. 
  • Hobson hit on a mid-range jumper that broke the tie and Edwards followed suit with another three-pointer that put Wagner up 39-34.
  • Dabney's jumper and a layup from Davis trimmed the Wagner lead to one, 39-38, with 4:46 left in the period.
  • The Seahawks caught fire, sparking a 9-0 burst in building a ten-point advantage, 48-38.
 
  • The Pios netted 11 of the final 16 points in the quarter, but Wagner remained ahead 53-49. 
 
Fourth Quarter
  • The Green & White opened the quarter with freshman guard Alex Cowan hitting the backend of a two-shot foul. 
  • Sacred Heart netted the next five points, capped by a Davis jumper that tied the game at 54. 
  • Davis was once again the catalyst as she put the visitors up 58-54.
  • Krista Grava added a layup for Wagner that trimmed the lead down to two, 58-56, but Murphy buried a corner three that gave Sacred Heart a 61-56 edge. 
  • Davis scored half of SHU's eight points over the next 3:14 that increased the visitors lead to ten, 69-59, with 2:05 left in the contest. 
  • Krista Grava's 18th point of the game cut the deficit to eight, 71-63, but Sacred Heart closed out the contest on an 8-2 run in earning their second league win of the season. 
 
 Inside The Numbers
  • The Seahawks didn't allow Sacred Heart to score its first basket until nearly three minutes into the first quarter. 
  • Wagner converted 23 points off of 23 SHU turnovers. 
  • The Green & White scored 24 points in the paint, outscoring Sacred Heart 10-2 in the second quarter alone. 
  • The Pioneers held a 43-39 advantage on the boards.

  • Wagner will head out to Western Pennsylvania for the second week of Northeast Conference (NEC) action as the Green & White will take on defending league champions, Robert Morris, on Saturday, January 11 and conclude the road trip at Saint Francis U on Monday, January 13.
