Women's Basketball Suffers Hard Luck Setback At Saint Francis U, 51-50

Box Score (PDF) | Box Score (HTML)

Loretto, PA – Following Wagner's last timeout, and down 51-50 after a pair of Red Flash free throws, the Seahawks had a good look at the hoop but the ball rimmed out and a scrum ensued with Saint Francis U coming away with the loose ball as time expired as the Wagner women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 51-50, on Monday evening at DeGol Arena.

Redshirt senior guard Janelle Mullen was the lone Seahawk in double-figures, finishing the contest with 11 points. Classmate Jordan Hobson added nine points.

Junior Alayshia Dailey, who finished with six points, pulled down a team-leading nine rebounds while dishing out a game-high five assists in 29 minutes of action. Khaleah Edwards, who drove the lane on the Seahawks' final possession, ended the game with seven points and five rebounds.

Haley Thomas and Karson Swogger led the way for the Red Flash with 11 points apiece with Thomas recording double-double, grabbing ten rebounds in the win. Jenna Mastellone chipped in 10 points off-the-bench for SFU.

The Basics
  • Records: Wagner (4-11; 0-4 NEC) | Saint Francis U (6-10; 4-1 NEC)
  • Series History: Robert Morris now leads the head-to-head series, 49-22

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • The teams exchange a pair of buckets early on as SFU held a 4-2 lead on a Sam Sabino jumper before Hobson hit the first of her three three-pointers on the evening in giving the visitors its first lead, 5-4 before Edwards hit on a mid-range jumper to extend the advantage.

  • Following Thomas completing the traditional three-point at the line, redshirt junior guard Morgan Lenahan dialed up a three off the feed from Dailey that put the Seahawks ahead, 10-9.

  • From that point, Wagner closed out the stanza on an 11-6 burst in taking an 18-15 lead.

  • Lili Benzel had all six points during the Wagner run of nearly four and a half minutes.

Second Quarter
  • Krista Grava hit on the visitors' first possession of the second quarter, which bumped the visitors lead to five, 20-15, before Benzel converted again, this time, finding space in the paint.

  • The two teams went back-and-forth, with SFU scoring seven of the next 12 points, but it was the Seahawks who claimed the lead, 25-24, following Hobson's second long-range three.
  • Mullen added her second deep shot that increased the Red Flash deficit to four, 28-24, at the 5:42 mark.

  • Wagner took a 31-26 lead into the break, with the final field goal coming off a crafty move from sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava, who finished with just six points on the evening.

Third Quarter
  • Dailey kick-started the frame with a layup as Wagner took its largest lead of the contest at 33-26, just 11 seconds into the third quarter.

  • A 7-0 run from the Red Flash evened the game at 33 as Thomas swooped into the paint for the layup.
  • Wagner put an end to the Red Flash spurt as Edwards hit on a jumper.
  • Following a pair of misses from the charity stripe, Mastellone gave SFU the lead on her first trifecta of the night, as Saint Francis U led 36-35, at the 3:24 mark.
  • Her three-pointer was the start of an 8-3 run by the home team to close the quarter as the Red Flash led 41-38.

Fourth Quarter
  • Jackson made the backend of a two-shot foul, which brought Wagner to within two, 41-39, before Swogger hit from the outside and pushed the lead back to five, 44-39.
  • Mullen took over for the visitors, scoring Wagner's next five points in knotting the game at 44, after hitting on her third trey.

  • Swogger got the pass from Mastellone and promptly hit from the outside before Mastellone was able to hit on a layup that increased the lead to five, 49-44, with 4:40 showing on the clock.
  • Similar to Saturday's contest at Robert Morris down-the-stretch, Jackson was able to get past her defender in the paint and rattle in the bucket that saw Wagner once again down three, 49-46.
  • Edwards, with 3:06 left, made the frontend of her free-throw attempt, which made it a one-possession game, 49-47.
  • Following a missed layup by freshman guard Drayah Heyward, Dailey was in the right place at the right time, as she was able to putback the loose ball and tie the game at 49 with 1:14 left in regulation.

  • Freshman Alex Cowan stole the ball away from Thomas and was sent to the line after drawing the foul on Thomas.
  • Cowan, with the Saint Francis U faithful screaming ferociously, calmly sank the first attempt, which broke the tie and gave the visitors a one-point edge.

  • She missed the second, but Edwards was able to track down the loose ball.
  • Both teams were aggressive, but SFU forced a turnover on Cowan, as Phee Allen, was credited with the steal and calling timeout with 13 ticks left.
  • Out of the timeout, the Red Flash got the clock down to five seconds, where a foul on Jackson was called after Miller drew it in the paint.
  • Miller made both attempts, giving the lead back to SFU, and forced the Seahawks to take its 60-second timeout.
  • Out of the break, Edwards, who hit the game-winner at home against NJIT, had a similar look at the hoop but her chance rattled off-the-rim with a scrum that followed.
  • The referees went to the monitors to see if any time was to be added, as the initial horn blared before the sideline official could signal a held ball.
  • Following the review, the refs signaled that the game was over as SFU hung on for the one-point win.

Postgame Comments:
Head Coach Heather Jacobs
  • Thoughts on the weekend against Robert Morris & Saint Francis
    • "You know, we have a really resilient group... Things didn't go our way, but I am confident that we are going to keep battling and I am proud of our effort."
    • "We did some things, here and there, and we need to make some easy baskets and convert on our chances at the line, but, at the end of the day, I think, we have the resiliency to come back and to be coming back home and get back after it."
  • Upcoming Opponents (St. Francis Brooklyn & LIU)
    • Honestly, we were focused on this past weekend and we are taking it one game at a time. St. Francis (Brooklyn) actually just played here, so me and my staff got to see them a little bit."
    • Every game you have to go out there and give it your best effort, that's what makes it fun."

Inside The Numbers
  • Wagner converted a season-low 4 of 12 from the free-throw line, while the Red Flash only hit on 8 of 11 from the charity stripe.
  • The Seahawks were out-rebounded for the fourth straight contest, 41-29, despite holding an 11-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • The Green & White had a season-low eight turnovers while forcing 22 Red Flash mishaps and converting those into 18 points.
  • The Seahawks held a 9-3 advantage on second-chance opportunities while outscoring SFU, 12-4, on the fast break.

 Up Next:
  • The Seahawks return home to Grymes Hill on January 18 as they will welcome nearby rivals, St. Francis Brooklyn before hosting the LIU Sharks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20).
