West Long Branch, NJ – The Wagner College women's tennis team kicked off its fall season this afternoon with a 6-1 road triumph over Monmouth.

Today's triumph marked the first victory for first-year head coach Lynn Kiro

"I was happy with the way the girls competed today," commented Kiro. "It is a solid start to the season. The scoreboard doesn't show how tough the matches were in fact as Monmouth put forth a strong effort but I can't express how proud I am of our girls, who remained focused and determined and were rewarded with the victory."

The Seahawks swept through doubles play to record the first point of the match. Senior Vedika Anand and sophomore Samantha Lugtu bested Nicole Gasser and Sophia Fredriksson, 6-1, at No. 1.

Wagner claimed the doubles point at No. 3 as the tandem of sophomore Alegra d'Alessandro and newcomer Mia Groetsch got past Emily Manzo and Sydney DeNardo, 6-4. Junior Fidan Khalizade and sophomore Diana Pinzariu outlasted Ann Spurka and Caroline Mattise, 7-5, at No. 2.

Monmouth got its point at No. 4 singles as Fredriksson defeated Groetsch, 6-0; 6-1, to even the overall match at 1-1.

Pinzariu and Lugtu were victorious at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively, as the Green & White went ahead 3-1 in the overall match.

D'Alessandro earned a 6-2; 6-2 triumph over Chinonye Gabriel at No. 5 which gave the Seahawks their fourth victory.

Anand defeated Ann Spurka, 6-3; 6-1 at No. 1 for her 21st career singles victory. Since 2004, Anand ranks sixth on the all-time career singles wins list, as she is eight shy of tying the all-time win mark of 29, set by Madison Pautsch back in 2017.

In the final match of the afternoon, Khalilzade was pitted against Gasser at No. 2. After earning a 6-1 victory in the first set, Gasser came back in the back, outlasting the third-year Seahawk, 6-4, which setup a third and deciding set.

A back-and-forth affair, it was Khalilzade that was able to outlast Gasser, 11-9, as the Seahawks went on to win the match, 6-1.

The Green & White will be back in action this weekend as the team will travel to Hempstead, NY for the three-day Hofstra University Invitational.
