Field Hockey Loses Hard-Fought Game Against Lehigh To End Homestand

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College field hockey team dropped its fourth consecutive decision on Sunday (1-4), falling by a score of 5-1 to a hot Lehigh Mountain Hawks (5-1) squad on Sunday.

The Mountain Hawks were led by their top season-long performers during today's contest. Leading scorer on the season, junior forward Drew Pecora, was seemingly everywhere, recording recording two goals on five shots in the first half. Junior forward Anna Lehman, Lehigh's leader in assists, would also tally a goal in the first half, giving the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.

The Seahawks, who came into the game averaging 8.8 shots per game, were out-shot 26-8 on the day; a stat that has proven costly for Wagner so far on the season. The Green & White were led, once again, by freshman midfielder Hannah Meyer, who recorded four shots on the day, while adding an assist on the Seahawks' lone goal, which came 1:09 into the second half off the stick of freshman Taylor Duffany.

Duffany's goal will go down as the first ever recorded by a Seahawk at the newly-unveiled Wagner Field Hockey Complex.

Drawing to within 3-1 is as close as Wagner would get, however, as multiple penalty bookings caused the Seahawks to shift their focus towards defense. Meyer and Laura Van Hamburg received Green Card cautions in the third stanza, which helped  Lenke Havas find the cage in extending the Mountain Hawks' lead to 4-1. In the aftermath of Havas' goal, freshman goalkeeper Justine Van Spengler would receive a Red Card, causing Wagner to play a man down for the remainder of the game.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Olivia Perrone capped the day's scoring to fashion the final score at 5-1. Graduate goalkeeper Annabel Zandvoort started in net for the Seahawks, recording 10 saves, while Van Spengler recorded four saves in 11-plus minutes of action.

The Seahawks will be back in action this Sunday as they take on the No. 17 Albany Great Danes on the road in Albany, NY. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Streaming will be available on America East TV.
