Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team and visiting University of Rhode Island Rams played to a 0-0 tie to end the first half but the Rams were able to break the stalemate in the 56th minute as the Seahawks dropped a 1-0 decision to URI on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.
The first opportunity for Wagner (1-3) came in the 14' as sophomore forward
Luisa Barone was able to find space but her attempt said left of the net. Five minutes, Barone was again in the mix as this time her chance from twenty yards out on the left was stopped by URI's goalkeeper, Teresa Morrissey.
The Rams (2-1) would have their second chance of the stanza in the 20' as Rebecca D'Anna booted from approximately twenty yards out but Wagner's senior goalkeeper,
Delaney Beck, was able to make the stop keeping it deadlocked at nil.
In the 25', senior tri-captain
Maria Nunez botted a rocket toward the net, but her chance went wide of the target, keeping the game scoreless.
With just three minutes to go before the break, senior defender
Autumn Clark lined up from about 22 yards out on the left side and sent a shot that broke left towards the back post but was halted by a diving stop from Morrissey.
The Seahawks and Rams played a scoreless first half, with URI holding an 8-5 advantage on shots and Wagner having one corner opportunity.
Rhode Island controlled the momentum early in the second half, sending a pair of shots high over the net, with one coming from Tali O'Leary, who received the pass from Brooke Cavino on the give-and-go in the 52'.
The visitors broke through in the 56' as Kelly Fitzgerald lofted a long pass into the box and Cavino was able to track it down and getting away from two Seahawk defenders before beating Beck with a shot to the back left of the net in putting URI ahead, 1-0.
Clark gave the home eleven a chance in the 82' but her shot attempted was misdirected right of the net as the Rams held on for the victory.
For the first time since 2010, when Wagner traveled to Hawaii, the Seahawks will travel to the West Coast, as they will face the Saint Mary's (CA) Gaels, who compete out of the West Coast Conference, on Sunday, September 8. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. (PST), 4:00 p.m. (EST).
