Staten Island. NY – With the game tied at 1-1 after five innings, Stony Brook erupted for four runs in the sixth before Wagner scored four over its half of the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 5-5, but a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth proved to be the difference as the Seahawks were edged, 6-5, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 15-30 on the year while Stony Brook moves to 27-19.
Senior
Anthony Pecora and junior
Tyler Sanfillippo each had multi-hit games, with Pecora collecting three hits and a team-high two RBI while Sanfillippo added two hits and a RBI. Senior
Joe Silvestrone and junior
Freddy Sabido also added RBIs for the Seahawks.
Senior left-hander,
Neil Abbatiello, worked five innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out five batters. The North Salem, NY native upped his career strikeout total to 196 while not factoring in today's decision. Junior
Nick Robino was tagged with the loss, going 1.1 frames and giving up the eventual go-ahead run.
Chris Hamilton and Sean Buckhout led the Stony Brook offense with two RBIs and Hamilton collected two hits. Bret Clarke scattered three hits while giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out seven in earning the win.
After both teams were held scoreless over the first three frames, the Seahawks struck first in the bottom of the fourth. Sanfillippo reached on an error by SBU's right fielder, Brandon Alamo, as Sanfillippo moved to third. Sabido lofted a deep fly to right field that scored Sanfillippo for the first run of the contest.
The Seawolves then plated five runs over the next two innings, in taking a 5-1 lead. John Tuccillo singled in Buckhout in the top of the fifth that knotted the game at 1-1 before the visitors staged a four-run sixth.
Brandon Janofsky singled to left off of
Nick Zuppe, who replaced Abbatiello. Nick Grande walked to put two men on. Back-to-back RBI base hits upped the visitors lead to 3-1 before Buckhout capped off the four-run outburst with a two-run double down the left field line, extending the Stony Brook llead to 5-1.
Wagner responded with four runs over its half of the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Pecora doubled down the left field line before crossing the plate on Sanfillippo's RBI grounder to short that made it 5-2.
In the Wagner half of the seventh, sophomore
Mike Ruggiero drew a one-out walk. Junior
Eric Lauk followed suit after catcher
Johnny Kampes flew out to deep center. Silvestrone laced an 0-2 RBI single to left field that made it 5-3.
The next batter, Pecora, tripled to left-center, clearing the bases and tying the game at 5-5. For Pecora, it marked his 12th career triple, one short of the program's all-time record, held by Nick Papa, who finished his career with 13.
In the ninth, Brad Hipsley was hit by a Robino pitch and moved to third on an eventual wild pitch. After Nick Grande walked, he promptly stole second. Hamilton took Robino's full count pitch to right field, which plated home the go-ahead run in Hipsley, as Stony Brook regained the lead at 6-5.
The Seahawks had a chance in the bottom of the ninth. Lauk reached on an infield single to third before Pecora roped a single through the left side that moved Lauk to second. Wagner wasn't able get the tying or potential winning run to score as Nick DeGennaro induced junior pinch-hitter,
Griffin Schneider, to pop out to short. With Wagner down to it's last out, sophomore
Emil Matti lined out to short as SBU held on for the win.
The final regular season home game of the 2019 schedule is slated for tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first-pitch as these two teams conclude their three-game series.
