New Haven, CT – The Wagner women's tennis team suffered its first Northeast Conference (NEC) defeat at Sacred Heart, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Yale Tennis Courts.

With the setback, the Seahawks fall to 4-7 overall on the season while standing at 2-1 in league contests. The Pioneers move to 6-13 and 1-2 in conference matches.

The Pioneers swept through the three doubles matches in securing the first point. Co-captains Vedika Anand and Rina Baynes put a valiant effort at No.1 before being outlasted by Brianne Lauria and Lauren Santarsiero, 7-5.

The Seahawks were victorious at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Sophomore Fidan Khalilzade defeated Lauria, 3-6; 7-5; 10-5 at No. 2 while Baynes earned a 6-1; 7-5 triumph over Santarsiero at No. 4

For Baynes, it marked her 26th career singles victory, as she continues to climb the all-time career wins list. The Johns Creek, GA native is currently third on the career wins list, behind former Seahawks, Madison Pautsch ('17), who is the all-time wins leader at 29, and Brittany Frazza ('09), who notched 28 during her tenure on Grymes Hill.

(*Note: The all-time career wins list dates back to the 2005, whereas the Northeast Conference started keeping track of dual match wins*).

The Green & White will travel up to Stony Brook to tangle with the Seawolves at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
