Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner baseball team broke open a 3-3 game with five runs in the 12th inning en route to posting an 8-4 victory at Mount St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon.
In winning their third straight game, the Seahawks improve to 13-20 overall and 7-6 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Mount falls to 11-25 and 5-8 in league contests.
Every Seahawk starter recorded at least one base hit in today's victory, led by senior CF
Joe Silvestrone, who collected three hits while scoring twice and adding an RBI. Junior 1B
Tyler Sanfillippo and sophomore LF
Emil Matti each had two hits and drove in two RBIs.
Freshman catcher,
Johnny Kampes, went 1-for-5 with his lone hit going for a solo home run in the top of the 12th that broke the 3-3 tie. For Kampes, it marked his first collegiate home run. Junior
Nick Robino (2-1) collected the win, firing two scoreless innings in which he gave up a walk and notched a strikeout.
Starter
Eric Ligda went 6.1 innings in which he gave up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two while not factoring in the decision. Junior reliever,
Justin Beyer, came on to toss the next 2.2 innings, in which he recorded a pair of strikeouts, a walk, while allowing a run on two hits.
Owen Wosleger led the Mountaineers with two hits and two runs scored while Patrick Causa and Zack Costello each were credited with one RBI in the setback. Starter Trey McGough, like Ligda, didn't factor into the decision, after going 5.2 innings in which he gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out three. Dennis Snyder (0-4) was pegged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
After four scoreless innings, Wagner struck for the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Sanfillippo reached on a fielding error by his first base counterpart. Sophomore
Mike Ruggiero sent a one-out single to right center, which moved Sanfillippo to third.
With the count at 1-1, Kampes recorded the first of his two RBIs on the afternoon, reaching on a fielder's choice which plated home Sanfillippo. Senior
Anthony Pecora walked to give Wagner a pair on base before the rally was halted on the force out at second.
The visitors struck again in the top of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. Silvestrone singled through the right side and, with two-outs, Sanfillippo singled through the left side that scored Silvestrone.
Mount St. Mary's cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame, as Causa ripped a two-out RBI single through the left side that plated home Wosleger for Mount's first run of the contest. The Mountaineers evened the score at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Pat Daly connected on a game-tying single to left center, scoring Alex Kriss from second.
Each team scored a run in its half of the eighth in making it a 3-3 game. For Wagner, Silvestrone roped a 0-1 single to left, scoring Pecora before Mount St. Mary's answered with a Costello RBI infield single to second that plated home Wosleger.
In the 12th, Wagner opened the game up, scoring five times on five hits with one MSM error in the frame. Kampes led off against Snyder and sent his 0-2 pitch over the left field wall as the Seahawks regained the lead at 4-3.
After Pecora reached on a walk, Silvestrone and senior
Will Johnson connected for back-to-back one out singles that loaded the bases. After junior
Griffin Schneider made the second out, Sanfillippo singled through the left side that scored Pecora, giving the visitors a 5-3 advantage.
The next batter, Matti, belted a two-run single to left center and moved to second on the throw as Silvestrone and Johnson both scored and Sanfillippo moved to third, before crossing the plate on a throwing error by Daly in center.
John LaPointe came on to work the bottom of the stanza. The left-handed reliever got the first two on seven pitches before Myles Nicholson tripled to left center and came into score on a fielding error by freshman
Shamus Connolly at second that cut the lead to 8-4.
LaPointe retired Thomas Savastio swinging at strike three that preserved Wagner's third straight victory.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow from the E.T. Straw Family Field with first-pitch set for 11:00 a.m.
