Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to LIU Brooklyn in Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Junior LF
Freddy Sabido led the Green & White at the plate with two hits in the contest while senior CF
Joe Silvestrone and junior 1B
Tyler Sanfillippo, the reigning NEC Player of the Week, collected one hit apiece.
Senior left-hander
Neil Abbatiello (1-4) took the loss, going seven innings in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and issued four walks, while recording one strikeout. Fellow southpaw,
John LaPointe, hurled the final two frames, giving up two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out a pair.
Brock Hallum led the visiting Blackbirds with two hits and two runs scored. Luiny Monegro has a pair of RBIs to lead the LIU offense as he along with Hallum and Andrew Smith collected an RBI in the win. Nick Torres went the distance in earning his third victory of the season, as he scattered four Wagner hits without allowing a run and recorded five strikeouts.
Both teams mirrored one another over the first two frames as Wagner and LIU each had a hit in their half of the first before being retired in order in the second. In the top of the third, the Blackbirds struck first. With two outs, Joe Mercadante drew a walk. The next batter, Rob Griswold, ripped a single to center field that was misplayed by Silvestrone, allowing Mercadante to come around from first for the game's first run.
The next inning, the visitors tacked on two more in taking a 3-0 lead as Monegro laced a single back up-the-middle, scoring both Tim Bechtold and Hallum.
Wagner tried to answer back in its half of the fourth as Sabdio led off with a bunt single down the third base line. Silvestrone followed with a base knock to left to give the Seahawks two men on with no one out. Senior
Will Johnson reached on a fielder's choice, as Silvestrone was forced out at second before junior
Griffin Schneider grounded into a 5-4-3, double-play, ending the Seahawk threat.
LIU added two more in the top of the eighth to go up by five, as Hallum drove in his second RBI of the contest with a single to left and Smith followed with a double to deep left center field that brought in Hallum.
These teams close out their three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at 1:00 p.m. Keith Raad will have the call on NECFrontRow.com
