Princeton, NJ – The No. 16 Wagner women's water polo team fell to the No. 18 Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon by a final count of 11-10.
The 21-8 Seahawks opened the first quarter with a 4-2 lead on goals from freshman, and reigning Rookie of the Week,
Sofia Diaz Alvarez (2), senior
Erica Hardy and sophomore
Malia Josephson.
Diaz Alvarez scored her third tally of the game, registering a hat trick, to open the second stanza. Princeton fired back, scoring two unanswered goals before the horn sounded to conclude the first half with the Green & White holding a one-goal lead at 5-4.
The Tigers opened the third period winning the sprint and finding the back of the net to knot the score at 5-5. Wagner answered with three additional goals from Diaz Alvarez (2) and Hardy (1) as part of a 3-1 run to take back the lead at 8-6.
Princeton, however, registered two consecutive goals to tie the game once more at 8-8 before Josephson marked her second tally to put the Green & White up by one after three quarters of play.
To begin the fourth and final period, Princeton scored three goals in a row, with the last coming off a five meter penalty shot, to take the lead at 11-9. Hardy found the back of the net once more, but the Seahawks were unable to notch the equalizer as the Tigers held on for the 11-10 win.
Despite the loss, sophomore
Katherine Campbell made five saves in the cage and grabbed one steal.
Wagner is back in action on April 6-7 in Brooklyn, NY when the Seahawks return to MAAC play with matchups against Marist and St. Francis Brooklyn.
