Teaneck, NJ – In a tightly contested Northeast Conference (NEC) men's tennis match, the Wagner College Seahawks were outlasted by its conference rival, the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in league play while the Knights move to 5-8 and remain perfect in league contests, as they stand at 2-0.
The loss in conference play for Wagner snaps a six-match unbeaten streak in conference tilts, as the 2017-18 squad went undefeated (5-0) and this year's team earned a 6-1 triumph over St. Francis Brooklyn back on February 16.
The Green & White kicked off Wednesday's match by taking two of three in doubles to secure the first overall point. The tandem of newly minted NEC Player of the Week, junior
Dylan Walters, and graduate
Lucas Gonzalez, the hero in Sunday's 4-3 victory at Navy, defeated Maciej Autuch and Moric Budinszky, 6-4, at No. 2.
In No. 3 action, seniors
Eric Poland and
Ilya Kneppelhout also earned a 6-4 win in defeating Ivan Solans Diaz and Eduardo Cabral. FDU's pairing of Mehdi Dhouib and Andris Gudins survived a scare from seniors
Anatoliy Lashkul and
Dale Sandy, besting the Seahawk duo, 7-5.
In singles, the Knights evened the score at 1-1 after Dhouib defeated Lashkul, 6-3; 6-1, at No. 1. Wagner rattled off the next two singles wins at No. 3 and No. 4 as Gonzalez beat Autuch, 6-3; 6-3, while junior
Hans Ohrner followed suit in recording a 6-3; 6-3 victory over Budinszky.
FDU rallied back in the match in taking No. 5 and No. 2 singles, as in No. 2 Gudins edged out Walters, 3-6; 6-4; 7-6 (7-3) to set up the deciding match at No. 6.
In the match clinching finale, junior
Siddharth Anand was pitted against Eduardo Cabral at No. 6. After dropping the first set, 6-4; Anand fought back valiantly in taking the second set, 7-6 (7-3), in evening the set at 1-1. In the third and final set, it was Cabral who was able to record the victory for his team, defeating Anand, 6-3.
The men's tennis team are scheduled to play host to Hofstra University on April 3 on Staten Island at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
