Annapolis, MD – With the match knotted at 3-3, graduate transfer
Lucas Gonzalez took the first set, 7-5, before Matthew Lee came back in the second with a 6-4 winner before Gonzalez outlasted Lee, 7-6 (8-6) in clinching the match for the Wagner College men's tennis team, as the Seahawks defeated the Navy Midshipmen, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Green & White moves to 5-3 on the season while Navy falls to 21-13 overall on the season.
Wagner claimed the doubles point after taking No. 1 and No. 3 as seniors
Anatoliy Lashkul and
Dale Sandy earned a 6-3 triumph over Andrew Hicks and Romesh Kahatapitiya at No. 1. Seniors
Ilya Kneppelhout and
Eric Poland defeated Cameron Kirkpatrick and Sam Vagner, 6-3, at No. 3.
The Seahawks jumped out to 3-0 lead as junior
Hans Ohrner defeated Cameron Kirkpatrick, 6-3; 6-3 at No. 4 before junior
Dylan Walters earned a 6-0; 6-4 win over Kahatapitiya at No. 2
Navy earned victories at No. 5, No. 1 and No. 6 to tie the match at 3-3 setting up the deciding match at No. 3.
Wagner will be back in action on March 27 as the Seahawks will resume Northeast Conference (NEC) play as they will travel to Teaneck, NJ to square off against Fairleigh Dickinson for a 1:00 p.m.
