Northeast Conference Tournament Tiebreaker Scenarios

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's basketball team will host Robert Morris in its regular season finale on Saturday, March 2 in a 4:00 p.m. Senior Day Tip-off.

Senior Day
The Seahawks, who will be seeking a regular season sweep of the Colonials, will honor a pair of graduating senior guards in Elijah Davis and Devin Liggeons in a pre-game ceremony.

Bashir Mason a Perfect Seven Straight NEC Berths
*Wagner head coach Bashir Mason has now led the Seahawks to a berth in the NEC Tournament in each of his seven seasons at the helm of the Seahawk program. As a program, the Green & White have qualified for nine consecutive NEC appearances. In the 2019 NEC Tourney, which begins with the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 6, Wagner can finish either with the No. 6 or the No. 7 seed.. The Seahawks will be the No. 6 seed with a win over RMU or the No. 7 seed with a loss.

The Matchup
*Robert Morris enters Saturday's play with an overall record of 15-15 and a 10-7 mark in the Northeast Conference (NEC), which places the Colonials in a third-place tie with Sacred Heart.

*Wagner is 13-15 overall and in a tie for sixth in the NEC standings with LIU Brooklyn, as the Seahawks and Blackbirds own matching 8-9 conference marks.

*The Green & White saw their hopes of earning a top-four seed, and resultant quarterfinal home game in next week's NEC Tournament, come to an end with Thursday's 83-72 home loss to first-place Saint Francis U.

*Also on Thursday night, RMU, who sat atop the NEC standings for much of the year, dropped their fourth game in its last six, falling at Sacred Heart by an 87-63 count.

All-Time Series Against The Robert Morris University Colonials
*The Seahawks and the Colonials are meeting for the 76th time with Robert Morris holding a 45-30 edge in the head-to-head series, which includes RMU's 57-51 victory over the Seahawks back on January 26 in Moon Township, PA.

*Wagner has won seven of the last nine meetings between the schools and saw a three-game winning streak over the Colonials end in this season's initial meeting between the schools.

*Those three straight wins for the Seahawks all came a year ago when Wagner swept the two-game regular season matchups before knocking off RMU in the 2018 NEC Tournament's semifinal round at the Spiro Sports Center

2017-18 Meetings Between Wagner and RMU
*January 20, 2018, Wagner 62, Robert Morris 49 (Staten Island, NY)
*January 28, 2018, Wagner 77, Robert Morris 64 (Moon Township, NJ)
*March 2, 2018, Wagner 75, Robert Morris 64 (NEC Semifinals– Staten Island, NY)

The Last Time:

*
Redshirt senior guard Romone Saunders scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half and sophomore forward Nigel Jackson added 13 but then NEC-leading Robert Morris was able to hang on and survive for a 57-51 win in a typical physical, defensive-minded, half-court dog fight between these teams.

*Malik Petteway was the lone RMU player in double figures with 13 points, Jon Williams had nine, while his brother Josh Williams, along with Matty McConnell, finished with eight points apiece.

*RMU appeared to be on its way to an eight-point halftime lead, grinding out a 24-16 advantage, before Jackson ended the half by banking home a three-pointer with three seconds to go in making it a 24-19 game at the intermission.

*The Colonials opened the second half with a 10-2 run, capped by a Petteway jumper at the 14:52 mark, that put RMU on top by a 34-24 count. Midway through the second half, Robert Morris appeared to be on the verge of breaking it open after a Sayveon McEwen layup gave the Colonials their biggest lead of the game at 40-28.

*At the 9:35 mark, Saunders stemmed the tide by driving in for an old-fashioned three-point play in triggering a 12-2 Seahawk run that was capped by another Saunders layup, this one at the 7:07 mark, that  made it a 42-40 game. With Wagner now back in it, the game remained a hard-nosed affair the rest of the way.

*At the 2:42 mark, Saunders knocked down an elbow jumper that drew the Seahawks to within three at 46-43. Wagner got to within two points at 47-45 with 1:32 remaining following pair of free throws from senior guard Elijah Davis.

*With 1:00 left to play, Jon Williams hit a big jumper in traffic that pushed the lead back to four at 49-45. Following a missed layup by Saunders at the 38-second mark, Josh Williams sank a pair of free throws seven seconds later to make it 51-45, and the Colonials were able to escape from there.

Wagner Last Time Out
*Senior guard Elijah Davis scored a career-high 27 points to lead three players in double figures but it wasn't enough to overcome a late Saint Francis U rally as the Red Flash pulled away late for an 83-72 win on Thursday night at the Spiro Sports Center in a game that was televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.

*After falling behind by a 43-39 count at halftime, Wagner fought back to take a pair of second-half leads, the last coming at the 11:33 mark when a Davis three-pointer put the Seahawks on top 57-54.

*The Red Flash answered with two consecutive treys by Andre Wolford, the first with 10:35 left that tied it at 57-57, and the second at the 9:54 mark which gave SFU a 60-57 lead. Not to be outdone, redshirt senior guard Romone Saunders countered with a three-ball of his own to forge a 60-60 tie with 9:33 remaining.

*A pair of Keith Braxton free throws at the 8:51 mark gave Saint Francis U the lead for good at 62-60. It was still anybody's game, with Wagner down by just three at 66-63 with 6:40 left following a Davis free throw, before the Red Flash answered with a quick-strike 12-0 run over the next three minutes.

*The run, which was highlighted by consecutive three's from Jamaal King and Randall Gaskins, allowed SFU to surge to a commanding 78-63 with 3:42 left and the Red Flash were able to hang from there.

*The 27 points matches the highest-scoring game by a Seahawk this season as Saunders went for 27 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn back on January 5. The other two Wagner double-digit scorers on the night were Saunders and sophomore forward Nigel Jackson, who finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

*For Jackson, who was coming off a career-high 22-point outburst at FDU on Saturday, this marks his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game as he is averaging 13.5 points per game over this stretch.

*For SFU, Keith Braxton led all scorers with 20 points while Isaiah Blackmon added 19. Wolford and King finishing with 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Red Flash who outshot Wagner 45 percent to 38 percent, in addition to out-rebounding the Seahawks 43-35.

Jackson Has Picked Up Scoring Pace Over Last 4 Games
*Sophomore forward Nigel Jackson hit for 11 points on Thursday vs. SFU.

*For the 6-7 Baltimore, MD native , who was coming off a career-high 22-point outburst at FDU on Saturday, this marked his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game as he is averaging 13.5 points per game over this stretch.
