Greenville, NC –
A game-tying three run blast by junior Kaila Smith in the top of the sixth inning wasn't enough as the Wagner softball team suffered a 6-3 loss at East Carolina on Sunday morning.

With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-3 this season, while ECU improves its record to 8-1.

Wagner threatened in the second with base hits by Smith and junior Alyssa Tucker, but wasn't able to get a run across the plate.

After the Pirates scored three runs in the third, and one in the fifth, a single by senior Karen Prihoda and a walk to junior Hannah Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning for the Green and White.

Smith made the most of the opportunity, blasting Wagner's first home run of the season in tying the contest at three apiece heading into the bottom half of the sixth.

The Pirates, who compete in the competitive American Athletic Conference (AAC), responded with three runs in the sixth to pull away as freshman Kayla Hooks suffered the loss in her first collegiate start.

ECU held a narrow 10-9 edge in hits, as Prihoda and Smith led the way with two hits each for the Seahawks, while Prihoda and Tucker have hit safely in every contest.

The Seahawks are next in action at the Green and White Invitational, hosted by UNC Charlotte, starting on March 1.
