Greenville, NC – Despite scoring six runs for the second consecutive game, the Wagner College softball team fell 8-7 in extra innings to Cleveland State on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Seahawks drop to 1-2 on the year while Cleveland State improves to 1-2 in 2019.
The Seahawks once again got off to a solid start, as juniors
Kaila Smith and
Amelia Van Orman got the offense started and gave Wagner the lead on a Smith RBI double in the first.
In the third inning, the Green and White extended its lead further. With the bases loaded, consecutive base hits by senior
Jessica Carlucci and junior
Alyssa Tucker plated three runs, while a
Zoe Bender two-run double made it 6-0 Seahawks two batters later.
Cleveland State fought its way back with runs in the third, fifth, and sixth, before tying the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the ninth, senior
Karen Prihoda reached on a fielder's choice, was bunted into scoring position by junior
Hannah Lewis and scored on an error after stealing third to give the Seahawks the late lead.
The Vikings, however, delivered the winning hit in the bottom half of the inning for the 8-7 win.
In the circle, freshman Harvey pitched 8 innings after earning the start, while classmate
Kayla Hooks was charged with the loss in relief.
The Seahawks return tomorrow for an 11:30 am matchup with East Carolina University to conclude the ECU Pirate Clash.
