Flushing Meadows, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team put forth a valiant effort against Big East members, St. John's, on Friday under-the-lights at the USTA National Tennis Center, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Red Storm.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 3-4 overall on the season while St. John's improves to 3-1 on the year.
St. John's secured the first point of the match, taking No. 1 and No. 2 matches by a 6-0; 6-1 decision. No. 3 doubles, which featured Seahawk sophomore
Fidan Khalilzade and newcomer
Diana Pinzariu taking on Gabriela Tenorio and Delia Arranz went unfinished with the Seahawks up 4-3 in the set.
The Red Storm took a 3-0 lead in the match after Jessica Livianu bested Khalilzade in No. 1 singles and Najah Dawson outlasted newcomer
Samantha Lugtu in No. 3 action.
The Green & White staged a brilliant comeback in the match. Freshman
Emma Reeves was awarded the victory at No. 5 singles to put the visitors on the board. Senior co-captain,
Rina Baynes, defeated Jenelle Downer, 6-3; 6-1, as Wagner now trailed 3-2 in the overall match.
In what turned out to be the clinching match, junior co-captain
Vedika Anand was pitted against Oceane Garibal in No. 2 singles. The third-year Seahawk Anand, who was in search of her 20th career singles victory, took the first set, 6-4, before Garibal defeated her in the second by a 6-1 count. In the pivotal third set, it was Garibal who came out victorious (6-0), pushing St. John's to the overall win as Pinzariu was awarded the No. 6 win via default.
The Seahawks will have a month off before its next match, as they will head to West Point, NY on March 1 to tangle with Army West Point at 6:00 p.m and square off against Quinnipiac at West Point on March 2 at 1:00 p.m.
