Women's Basketball Falls To No. 4/5 Maryland In 2019-20 Season Opener On Tuesday Morning

Freshman Alex Cowan and sophomore Emilija Krista Grava led the way with 25 and 20 points, respectively.

College Park, MD – Wagner could not slow down the No. 4/5 ranked University of Maryland Terrapins in the 2019-20 season opener, falling 119-56 at the XFINITY Center on Tuesday morning. 
 
This morning's contest between the Seahawks and Terrapins marked the first official game of the season, as tipoff occurred at 11:00 a.m.
 

 
Freshman guard and Bowie, MD native, Alex Cowan, was one of two Seahawks to finish in double figures as the first-year Seahawk guard went for a team-best 25 points on an efficient 7-of-14 shooting from the floor while connecting on 4-of-7 from beyond-the-arc. She also grabbed five rebounds in her 30 minutes of action. 
 
Sophomore Emilija Krista Grava, a 2019 All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie Team selection a season ago, finished with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting while logging 37 minutes of play. 
 
Seven Maryland players scored in double digits, led by 18 apiece from Kaila Charles, Ashley Owusu, and Shakira Austin. Austin recorded a double-double in the process, finishing with a game-best 11 rebounds. Owusu was one assist shy of a double-double, ending the game with nine helpers.

 How It Happened
 First Quarter
  • A 7-0 run put the Terrapins ahead before Khaleah Edwards' layup put the Seahawks on the board at the 8:19 mark. 
  • A second run, this time of the 7-2 variety, doubled up the lead for the Terps. 
  • The Seahawks went on a mini 5-2 spurt of their own, cutting the lead to 16-9, as Krista Grava was able to hit on the baseline jumper. 
  • Wagner went without a basket over the next four minutes before newcomer Alex Cowan made one-of-two from the free throw to end the quarter. 
Second Quarter
  • Maryland didn't allow a Seahawk field goal for over four minutes in sparking a 17-5 run that saw the Terps lead elevate to 55-14 as Cowan was able to hit on her first three-pointer of the contest. 
  • Maryland closed out the frame on a 13-0 run in pulling away tp a 68-17 lead. 

 
Third Quarter
  • Wagner started to find its rhythm in the third quarter as the visitors scored ten of the 19 points over the first five minutes of the frame, by going 4-of-7 from the field as Krista Grava scored eight-point during the burst. 
  • Maryland concluded the third quarter outscoring the Green & White, 12-10, as the Terps went 5-of-6 shooting from the floor while Wagner 4-of-6 and led by Heyward, who had half of the team's points, which included a nifty runner in the paint. 
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Cowan connected on another long-range shot 15 seconds into the final frame, which gave her 15 at the point before UMD responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a Faith Masonius layup.
  • Maryland closed the contest outscoring Wagner 22-16 down-the-stretch in concluding the first game of the 2019-20 season.
 



 Inside the Numbers
  • The 25 point outburst from Cowan to go along with Krista Grava's 20 points marks the first time since November 14, 2014, that a Seahawk has scored 20 or more points in a season opener as former Seahawk standout, Jasmine Nwajei, netted 32 at Virginia Commonwealth.
  • Dating back to the 1999-00 season, this marks the first time that a pair of Seahawks have gone for 20 or more points in the same game. 
  • Cowan, Heyward, and freshman forward Katrice Jackson all made their debuts against the Terrapins. 
  • Morgan Lenahan, who sat out the 2018-19 season due to injury, returned to the court and started for the first time since March 4, 2018, on the road at Saint Francis U. Lenahan dished out a team-best five assists.
  • Junior Khaleah Edwards, who played 24 minutes, tied Cowan for the team lead in rebounding this morning, also pulling down five caroms.
 
 Who's Next?
  • The Seahawks will close out the first week of the 2019-20 season with a trip to Indianapolis, IN as they will square off against Big East member, Butler, at noon from Hinkle Fieldhouse.
