Indianapolis, IN – The Wagner College women's basketball team forced 26 Butler turnovers in the contest but couldn't overcome an early 18-point deficit as the Seahawks dropped a 74-58 decision to the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon from Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Freshman guard Alex Cowan, who earned her first career start, led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting while connecting on 6-of-9 from beyond-the-arc in 37 minutes of action.

Sophomore guard Raven Pitt added a career-high eight points on 3-of-5 shooting while recording two steals and two caroms in her 24 minutes off-the-bench.

Three Bulldogs scored in double-figures, led by 2019-20 All-Big East Preseason Selection, Kristen Spolyar. Spolyar converted on 6-of-12 from the field while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists in 25 minutes of play. Genesis Parker poured in 13 points and three assists while Tenley Dowell added 12 points and a game-high six steals.

The Basics
  • Records: Wagner 0-1 (0-0 NEC) | Butler 0-0 (0-0 Big East)
  • Series History: Butler now leads the all-time series, 1-0

 How It Happened
 First Quarter
  • Butler jumped out to an 11-0 lead before Cowan was able to bury a three-pointer from just outside the center.
  • The Bulldogs outscored the Seahawks, 10-0, in taking a 21-3 lead after Tenley Dowell completed the traditional three-point play from the line.
  • At the 1:47 mark, Wagner freshman forward Katrice Jackson muscled in two for her first collegiate points before scoring her second basket with 18 seconds left in the frame.
  • Dowell closed out the first stanza with a three that gave Butler a 27-9 advantage.

Second Quarter
  • Both teams were relatively quiet in the opening minutes of the second quarter before Morgan Lenahan was able to convert on a difficult runner in the paint for the first score of the period.

  • Genesis Parker answered back with a three-pointer that gave the Bulldogs a 30-11 edge.
  • The Seahawks kept pace with the Bulldogs down-the-stretch, as Butler only closed out the frame outscoring the visitors 10-9, but took a 40-20 lead into the intermission.
Third Quarter
  • Wagner trimmed the lead to 48-30 at the 5:44 mark after opening the third outscoring Butler, 10-8.
  • Cowan and fellow classmate, Drayah Heyward, combined to score nine of the Seahawks' 16 points in the quarter.
  • The Green & White was able to hold Butler to just 26.7 percent shooting from the floor in the third (4-of-15) while forcing nine turnovers.

Fourth Quarter
  • The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the game, 66-38, at the 5:50 mark of the fourth when Spolyar was able to hit on the runner in the paint.
  • The Green & White did outscore Butler, 22-15, in the final frame, with Cowan and sophomore Emilija Krista Grava combining for 15 of the 22 points while holding the Bulldogs to just 30.0 (3-of-10) over the final ten minutes.

Inside the Numbers
  • For the second straight contest, Cowan has scored at least 20 points or more, as she poured in 25 in her collegiate debut at No. 4/5 Maryland on Tuesday.
  • Cowan, who had six three-pointers in today's contest, marked the first time a Seahawk has hit for five or more since current teammate Janelle Mullen did so against Saint Francis U (3/4/19).
  • The Bowie, MD natvie needed one more three-pointer of tying seven former Seahawks who hit that mark in a single-game, the last being Marie-Laurence Archambault, who did so against St. Francis Brooklyn back on January 16, 2010.
  • Additionally, the 25 points at #4/5 Maryland she put up in the season opener is tied for the sixth-best outburst among all NCAA freshman thus far while her 23 points are in a tie for 11th.
  • Butler, who was tops in the Big East in turnovers forces, created 29 Seahawk turnovers and scoring 28 points off those mishaps while the Seahawks scored 17 points off 26 Bulldog turnovers.

 Who's Next?
  • The Green & White gear up for its home opener on Wednesday, November 13 as the Seahawks welcome Saint Peter's to the Spiro Sports Center.
  • Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • Keith Raad returns for his third season calling all the action on NEC Front Row.
