Women's Basketball Three-Game Win Streak Halted At Youngstown State On Saturday

Youngstown, OH - The Wagner women's basketball team saw its three-game win streak halted on Saturday afternoon, falling to Youngstown State, 64-42, at Beeghly Center. 

Saturday's contest between the Seahawks and the Penguins was the first-ever meeting. 

Redshirt junior guard Morgan Lenahan led the way for the Green & White, scoring a season-best 12 points in 29 minutes of action. Lenahan also grabbed a team-high seven caroms while also dishing out four assists.  Redshirt freshman guard Amanda Pollard and sophomore forward Nas Nigatu each finished with seven points apiece with Pollard tallying three helpers and Nigatu corralling four rebounds. 

Four Youngstown State players finished in double figures led by Chelsea Olson, who netted a game-high 18 points while recording a double-double with 11 rebounds. McKenah Peters contributed 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting while adding eight rebounds in 30 minutes. Maddie Schires and Jen Wendler added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • Youngstown State opened the game with a three from Olson before Pollard scored Wagner's first points with a jumper in the paint. 
  • The Penguins closed out the first quarter on a 10-0 run after Peters converted the traditional three-point in taking a 13-2 lead.

Second Quarter
  • Wagner opened the second quarter with two made free throws from newcomer Drayah Heyward
  • Reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, Emilija Krista Grava, scored her first points of the contest at the 6:56 mark after converting on the fast-break layup off the feed from Lenahan. 
  • The Penguins sparked a 13-0 run, extending its lead to 26-6 before Lenahan put an end to the run with a jumper just outside the paint at the 3:04 mark. 
  • Sophomore guard Raven Pitt scored on the fast break after getting the pass from Lenahan and was sent to the line but couldn't complete the three-point play. 
  • Youngstown State scored the final six points of the frame. 

Third Quarter
  • The Penguins controlled the majority of the momentum in the third, holding the Seahawks to just two made field goals,
  • Wagner did capitalize on its attempts from the charity stripe, going 6-of-6 from the line, with Pollard hitting on all four of her attempts from the line. 

Fourth Quarter
  • The Seahawks found their rhythm in the fourth, opening the frame on a 7-0 run, as Lenahan first scored in the paint and Nigatu converted on her first three-pointer of the season off the feed from newcomer, Alex Cowan
  • Nigatu added a layup that forced Youngstown State to take a timeout and sending the game into a media timeout. 
  • This was the closets that Wagner would get as the Penguins outscored Wagner, 16-7, in upping the lead to 63-36 after Aulbach converted on the jumper in the paint. 
  • Wagner ended the game on a 6-1 run, capped by Pitt making one-of-two from the line. 
  • In the fourth, Wagner outscored Youngstown State, 20-17, while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and holding the Penguins to just 35.7 percent. 


Next Up:
  • The Seahawks closes out the first month of the season by returning home to the Spiro Sports Center to host Division II member, Staten Island (CSI)
