Khaleah Edwards Layup With 0.4 Left In Regulation Lifts Wagner Past NJIT, 61-59, For Third Straight Win

Staten Island, NY -  For the second time in three games, the contest was decided in the final moments as Morgan Lenahan inbounded the ball and found teammate Khaleah Edwards slashing to the hoop as Edwards drove the lane and put in what turned out to be the game-winner as the Wagner women's basketball team defeated NJIT, 61-59, in earning its third straight home win. 


Four Seahawks finished in double figures led by Edwards, who had a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor while grabbing a team-best eight rebounds. 
 

Amanda Pollard had a career evening, scoring a season and career-high 13 points on 4-of-10 while hitting three from the outside. Freshman guard Alex Cowan was next with 12 points and reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week, Emilija Krista Grava finished with 11 points and six rebounds. 

Lenahan, who was the inbounder in Wagner's thriller over Saint Peter's dished out a team-best six helpers, which included the clincher to Edwards. 

The visiting Highlanders, who held a 59-56 lead with 1:12 remaining in the contest, had three players score in double-digits, led by Danielle Tunstall, who notched a double-double in concluding with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Maddie Martin netted 19 points and dished out seven assists while Kenna Squier added ten points.

  • Records: Wagner 3-2 (0-0 NEC) | NJIT 0-6 (0-0 ASUN)
  • Series History: Series even at 5-5. 
 
How It Happened:
First Quarter
  • Both teams struggled to find their rhythm over the first two minutes of play before the Highlanders scored the first basket on a three from Ellyn Stoll. 
  • Krista Grava netted home the first points of the contest for the Seahawks after getting the feed from Jordan Hobson
  • NJIT built a 10-7 advantage after Squier hit the layup.
  • Freshman Drayah Heyward would hit on back-to-back buckets in giving Wagner its first lead,11-10 before Tunstall hit on a pair of freebies in reclaiming a 12-11 after the first period. 


Second Quarter
  • A pair of turnovers from both teams opened the second frame before Milena Bajic's converted on a jumper and Tunstall added a layup in extending the lead to 16-11, which forced the Seahawks to call for time.
  • Pollard caught a spark, scoring the next five points for Wagner in trimming the lead to 18-16 before Tunstall was successful in converting in the paint that made it 20-16. 

 
  • The visitors held a 26-22 halftime advantage with Pollard leading the way for the Green & White with seven points.

Third Quarter
  • NJIT opened the third on a 6-0 run in building its largest lead of the contest, a 32-22 advantage as Tunstall recorded her 12th point of the game.
  • On the ensuing Wagner possession, Cowan was able to hit on the jumper to stop the NJIT burst.
  • Cowan's basket ignited a 15-8 run from the Seahawks over the next 6:33 with Edwards capping the run on a three-pointer from Lenahan in cutting the visitor's lead to 40-37. 
  • Stoll responded with a three from Squier that brought the lead to six, 43-37, with 1:30 left in the period. 
  • Following a pair of makes at the free-throw line from Tunstall, Edwards once again kept the Seahawks in the contest, drilling a corner trifecta on Lenahan's fourth-assist of the contest as Wagner trailed 45-40 heading into the final quarter.



Fourth Quarter
  • Pollard reached double-figures for the first time in her career after knocking down a big three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down that made it 45-43 in the opening minutes of the quarter.
  • Edwards tied it with a jumper at 45 before Squier's three put the visitors back ahead.
  • Cowan narrowed the gap to one, 48-47 before Tunstall scored her 20th point of the game at the 6:53 mark. 
  • Tunstall's layup with 5:24 remaining gave NJIT a 53-47 lead that they couldn't hang on to.
  • Cowan hit another big three that brought Wagner to within one possession, 53-50. 
  • Pollard knotted the score at 53 with her third trifecta of the evening. 

 
  • Overall, Wagner ignited a 14-6 down-the-stretch, which included Edwards game-winner in securing the Seahawks third straight win at home. 


Inside The Numbers:
  • Wagner's three-game home winning streak matches the 2008-09 Seahawks, who opened that season with three straight home wins (Nov. 14 vs. Army, 59-58; Nov. 18 vs. NJIT, 82-73 and Dec. 1 vs. Colgate, 58-56 (ot).
  • Edwards and Krista Grava have now scored in double-figures in three straight games, as the two players have combined to score 128 of the team's 218 combined points (58.7 percent)
  • Lenahan has now dished out five or more assists in four out of five games and three straight. 
  • Tonight's victory is Wagner's first when four players score in double-figures
  • Additionally, tonight's win was head coach Heather Jacobs' first against a member of the Atlantic Sun conference and 171st of her coaching career.
