Women's Basketball Picks Up Second Straight Home Win, 69-60, Over UMBC Saturday

Staten Island, NY -  The Wagner College women's basketball team, behind three players scoring in double figures, earned its second straight home win on Saturday afternoon, defeating America East members, UMBC, 67-60, at the Spiro Sports Center.

Sophomore forward Emilija Krista Grava, on the heels of a 45-point outburst against Saint Peter's on Wednesday evening, led the way for the Green & White, recording a team-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting while also pulling down seven rebounds in 37 minutes of action. 

Reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week, Alex Cowan, nearly notched her first career double-double, concluding the game with 15 points, ten of which coming in the second half, on 4-of-8 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out four assists. 

Junior Khaleah Edwards reached double-digits for the second straight contest, as the London, England native added 11 points in 34 minutes of play. 

UMBC was led by Te'yJah Oliver, who had a game-high 26 points on a 9-of-19 performance from the field. Janee'a Summers was the second Retriever to net double-digits, finishing with 12 points and grabbing a team-high eight caroms. 

At halftime of today's contest, Wagner Athletics recognized the members of the women's basketball 1988-89 team, who were celebrating its 30th anniversary of winning the program's first Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship.

 How It Happened
 First Quarter
  • Wagner jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage with Krista Grava picking up where she left off from Wednesday's contest. 
  • UMBC responded with a 13-2 run over a 3:16 span in taking a 13-7 lead before Krista Grava put an end to the outburst with a jumper. 
  • Edwards dialed up the first of her three trifectas that brought Wagner back to within one, 13-12. 
  • The visitors scored five of the final seven points of the first in taking an 18-14 lead. 
     
Second Quarter
  • Wagner opened the second quarter with an 8-4 burst in tying the game at 22 before O'lesheya Braxton was able to break the brief tie. 
  • Senior forward Jordan Hobson gave the Seahawks the lead back on a three-pointer at the 5:56 mark.
  • The home squad outscored UMBC, 14-12, over the final 5:47 as the game was tied at 36 heading into the break. 
Third Quarter
  • Wagner held the advantage early in the third, scoring eight of the first 12 points in the frame in taking a 44-40 lead as Krista Grava was the beneficiary of a well-timed pass from Morgan Lenahan, who finished with a team-best five assists. 
  • UMBC concluded the stanza on a 14-0 run in taking its largest lead of the contest, a 54-46 edge. 
Fourth Quarter
  • Edwards opened the final quarter of play with a three-pointer off the pass from Drayah Heyward before Lyric Swann answered back with a jumper of her own.  An 8-0 run by the Green & White allowed the Seahawks to reclaim the lead, 57-56, with 5:26 showing on the clock as Cowan drilled the three-pointer from Lenahan. 
  • The Seahawks stifling defense didn't allow another UMBC field until the last eight seconds of the game as a 10-1 run by Wagner gave them a 67-57 before Oliver hit on a three before the final horn. 
Next Up:
  • Wagner will close out its first homestand of the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, November 19 as they will host NJIT.
