New Britain, CT – The Wagner College women's soccer team (4-8-1; 2-2-1 NEC) dropped a 3-0 decision to the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions, Central Connecticut (5-4-4; 3-1-1 NEC) on Friday afternoon at the Central Connecticut Soccer Field.
CCSU's Roma McLaughlin netted both of the Blue Devils first half tallies.
In the 13' minute, Emily Hogan was able to move the ball up the right side before sending a pass to Jenna Rae Covello, who drew Seahawk goalkeeper
Delaney Beck up from her position and found McLaughlin who finished the play with her sixth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, the Green & White were called for a foul as the official awarded a penalty shot for CCSU. McLaughlin stepped up and beat Beck to her right in upping the Blue Devils lead by two.
Wagner's first chance came in the 35' as graduate
Mariana Jaramillo was able to fire off an attempt but was denied by CCSU's goalkeeper, Amanda McQuillan.
As play resumed for the second half, the momentum favored the visitors as sophomore midfielder
Gabby Cipriano's attempt was blocked in the 49'.
A minute later, junior forward
Lindsay Weiss was able to track the loose ball and send one on target that was destined for the goal but CCSU's Taylor Smith kept the ball from crossing the goal line. Sophomore forward
Luisa Barone ran down the loose ball but her chance went wide.
Beck was able to thwart McLaughlin's chance at a hat-trick as she made the stop in the 60'. Two minutes later, Erica Bardes sent a shot that hit the crossbar and scattered out-of-play.
CCSU notched its third goal of the contest as Ashley Wright was able to convert on the chance setup by Giavanna Inzerillo which sealed the victory for the Blue Devils.
Donnelly was credited with two shots in the match while Weiss and Jaramillo had a shot on target each. Beck made four stops in the contest.
Wagner concludes the weekend road trip on Sunday, October 13, as they take on Bryant at 1:00 p.m. in Smithfield, RI.
