Teaneck, NJ – The Wagner baseball team earned a 5-3 victory in the nightcap of Friday's doubleheader against the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson.
With the win, the Seahawks extend their winning streak to six straight while improving to 18-10 overall and 7-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The Mountaineers fall to 7-16 and 2-5 in league contests.
In game two, seven of the nine Seahawk starters recorded a hit, led by junior catcher
Phil Capra, who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Seniors
Sean Mazzio,
Kyle Cala and
Kyle Brey each drove in an RBI in the victory.
Junior LHP
Neil Abbatiello went gave up eight hits, just three earned runs, while walking two and striking out one over 4.1 innings of work while not factoring in the decision. Senior LHP
Brad Currao came on in relief and earned his second win of the season (2-0) after pitching 2.2 scoreless frames while walking three and striking out three on two hits.
Michael Collins suffered the loss (1-5) after surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out two. The Mountaineers' 2-through-5 hitters combined to go 8-for-14 with two runs scored as Alex Kriss, Patrick Causa, Vaughn Parker II and Thomas Savastio each had two hits in the contest.
Following a scoreless first, Mount St. Mary's went ahead 2-0 in the top of the second. Zack Costello doubled in Savastio for the game's first. Jared Urban delivered an RBI groundout to second in bringing home Randall Minogue for the second run of the inning.
Wagner cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning. Freshman designated hitter
Ben Montenegro led off with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Following a walk to
Will Johnson, Brey executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. The next batter, Mazzio, sent a hard-hit grounder to third, which scored Montenegro on the play.
The Mountaineers went ahead 3-1 in the top of the third as Kriss belted a full-count pitch from Abbatiello over the left field wall. The Seahawks responded in the bottom of the inning as senior LF
Anthony Godino led off with double and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Mountaineers right fielder.
The next Wagner hitter, Capra, sent a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield, which allowed Godino to tag up from third base and come across to score in once again making it a one-run ballgame.
Abbatiello worked a 1-2-3 top of the fourth before receiving run support in the bottom of the inning as the Green & White scored twice in taking a 4-3 lead. Mazzio sent a one-out single back up the middle and came in to score when Cala doubled to left center and moved to third on the throw home. Capra then delivered a two-out infield single deep to second base, which scored Cala and gave Wagner a 4-3 lead.
The Seahawks added one more in the fifth on a run-scoring double to center field off the bat of Brey. The Mountaineers had an excellent opportunity in the top of the seventh.
After Parker II doubled to center field to lead off the frame, Currao was able to retire Savastio on a groundout to third. The Howell, NJ native walked Andrew Malone on four straight pitches before retiring pinch-hitter, CJ Kozorosky, via a four-pitch strikeout for the second out. Costello walked which loaded the bases for the visitors.
Currao was able to seal the victory for Wagner after getting pinch-hitter, A.J. Narcise, looking at strike three in preserving the two-run win.
The Seahawks and Mountaineers are scheduled to play two more on Saturday, April 7, when teams meet at MCU Park in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, NY. First-pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
