Emmitsburg, MD – The Wagner College softball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, an extra-inning 2-1 contest in game one, followed by a 10-9 loss in game two.
With the two losses, Wagner now sits at 12-26 on the year and 2-9 in NEC play, while the Mountaineers improve to 14-21-1 and 4-6 in conference .
Game 1: Mount St. Mary's 2, Wagner 1 (9 innings)
The first game of the afternoon was a tightly-contested pitcher's duel between senior
Morgan Brown and Mount's Amanda Berkley, as both teams combined for just 10 hits in the contest.
After the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Seahawks answered in the top of the sixth as junior
Karen Prihoda tied the contest with one swing of the bat, belting her team-leading fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Following a scoreless seventh and eighth for both teams, the Mount came through in the bottom of the ninth, walking off on an RBI double by Shelbee Holcomb.
In addition to Prihoda, sophomores
Hannah Lewis,
Kaila Smith, and
Christina Harkins also recorded base hits in the contest, while Brown suffered the loss after striking out seven in 8.1 innings.
Game 2: Mount St Mary's 10, Wagner 9
The Seahawks nearly erased a three-run deficit in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs and moving the tying run to third base before falling on a game-ending double play, with the final out coming at home plate.
The Green and White started fast, taking the lead in the second inning. After loading the bases, consecutive walks to Lewis and senior
Maite Reece, followed by an RBI single by senior
Stefanie Aplin, gave Wagner a 3-0 advantage.
The Mount, however, answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wagner answered right back, scoring three runs in the top of the third on a two-run shot by junior
Jessica Carlucci and an RBI groundout by Prihoda.
Mount St. Mary's scored added two runs in the third and two in the sixth, while Harkins closed the gap with an RBI double in the fifth, setting up a dramatic finish.
Down 10-7, a walk to senior
Maddie Marable was followed by Harkins' first home run of the season, a one-out blast to left that pull the Seahawks within one.
Next up, sophomore
Zoe Bender doubled to left center and, after a Prihoda single, the Seahawks had runners on the corners with one out before a 1-3-2 double play ended the contest.
Freshman
Arielle Koerber was charged with the loss after striking out two batters in 2.2 innings, while junior
Ciera Luna threw 3.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs and striking out three.
Harkins led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while Lewis, Carlucci, and Bender had two hits each.
The Seahawks will play their final non-conference doubleheader at Iona on Wednesday, April 25, starting at 2:00 pm.
