New Haven, CT – The Wagner men's tennis team defeated the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 5-2, on Saturday evening.
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 11-8 overall on the year while finishing the Northeast Conference (NEC) slate a perfect 5-0.
This marks the first time in the program's history that the Green & White have finished its conference slate undefeated. Sacred Heart faltered to 4-13 overall and 0-2 in league matches.
In doubles action, the combination of junior
Eric Poland and sophomore
Dylan Walters continued to pay dividends as they defeated Chris Sause/Francisco Del Valle, 6-2, at No. 2 for the Seahawks lone victory in doubles. For Poland/Walters, they improved to a team-best 15-6 overall and 12-3 out of the No. 2 Flight position.
The Pioneers took No. 1 and clinched the doubles point at No. 3 as they recorded back-to-back 6-4 victories.
In singles action, Sacred Heart went ahead 2-0 in the overall match as Seiji Hosokowa defeated Walters, 6-1; 6-3. Wagner responded in winning the remaining five matches. Poland outlasted Sause, 6-0; 7-5 at No. 4 to put the visitors on the board. Poland earned his 43rd career singles win while improving to 17-12 on the season.
Junior
Anatoliy Lashkul edged out Derek Chapman, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at No. 2 in tying the match at 2-2. Sophomore
Hans Ohrner was pitted against Cory Seltman at No. 3. Ohrner took the first set 6-4 before Seltman answered back with a 6-3 winner, forcing a deciding a set. The second-year Seahawk captured the point on the heels of a 6-2 victory while picking up his 30th career singles triumph.
Senior
Charlton Boyd secured the victory for Wagner, as he defeated Bryan Einstoss, 6-3; 6-3. Junior
Dale Sandy added the fifth victory of the day at No. 6 singles with a 7-5; 6-4 winner over Del Valle. Boyd continued to make a case for being one of the top NEC players this season as he improved to 24-3 on the season and captured his 72
nd singles win of his four-year career.
Wagner closes out the 2018 regular season on Wednesday, April 18 as they play host to nearby rival, Staten Island. Wednesday is also Senior Day as the men's tennis team recognizes its senior class of
Boyd, Allen Wang and
Jeremy Nuss.
