Men's Tennis Blanks Staten Island On Senior Day; Senior Class Compiles 49 Wins Over Four-Year Career

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's tennis team concluded the 2017-18 against local rival, Staten Island, on Wednesday afternoon. The Seahawks shutout the Dolphins, 7-0, on Senior Day.
 
Prior to the match, Wagner recognized their two seniors: Charlton Boyd and Allen Wang. Wagner finished the year with a 12-8 record while the Dolphins fall to 5-4 on the season.
 

 
The Green & White took all three doubles matches in securing the first point of the match. Junior Ilya Kneppelhout and sophomore Hans Ohrner earned a 6-1 victory at No. 1 over Raymond Hwang and Matthew Vesci.
 
The Seahawk tandem of freshman Patricio Hernandez-Pons and sophomore Dylan Walters shutout the CSI pairing of Andrew Adia and Alex Tsui, 6-0 at No. 2. The senior honorees of Boyd and Wang earned their 11th victory of the season (11-1), besting David Luo and Tao Lin, 6-1, at No. 3.
 
For Boyd and Wang, they improved all-time to 12-2 in their career as doubles partners, as both student-athletes have been vital members of the program that compiled 49 wins over their four-year career.
 
In singles action, junior Eric Poland bested Hwang at No. 1, 6-1; 6-0 to give Wagner a 2-0 advantage. For Poland, the Fort Meyers, FL native earned his 44th career singles win, while picking up his first-ever singles victory at the Flight No. 1 position.
 
Boyd blanked Matthew Kotlyar in straight sets as the Shreveport, LA, who closed the match with an emphatic forehand winner, ran his program-leading singles win total to 73 as he moves to 25-3 overall on the season. This afternoon's match marked the first time since September 5, 2014, when he defeated Pat O'Shea of Holy Cross, 6-2; 6-2.
 
Junior Dale Sandy earned a straight set victory at No. 3 to earn his tenth singles win of the season. Kneppelhout followed suit at No. 4, defeating Tsui, 6-0; 6-0. Kneppelhout also picked up his tenth victory of the season.
 
Wang defeated Luo, 6-0; 6-1 at No. 5 action as the Clovis, CA native earned his seventh singles win of the season. Hernandez-Pons closed out the day with a straight set winner over Mitchel Voloshin (6-0; 6-0).
 
For the 2017-18 season, seven members of the squad notched double-digit victories, led by Boyd's 25 wins. Poland finished the regular season at 18-12 while Walters and Ohrner each recorded 15 victories. Junior Anatoliy Lashkul earned 13 wins while Kneppelhout and Sandy each finished with ten wins.
 
Wagner will now turn its attention to the postseason, which begins on Friday, April 20 at 9:00 a.m. from the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The Seahawks, who for the first-time in program history, will be the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship as they square off against local rival, the No. 7 seed St. Francis Brooklyn.
