Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team was shutout in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, 7-0, by the defending league champions, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in league contests while the Blackbirds improve to 13-4 on the season and remain unbeaten in NEC matches at 4-0.
LIU Brooklyn won all three doubles on the day to secure the first point in the match. The visitors went ahead 2-0 in the overall match after earning a victory at No. 1 singles.
Despite dropping the first set at No. 2, junior
Rina Baynes rallied back in the second set but was edged by Jessica Brzozowska, 6-0, 7-5 for the Blackbirds third victory. In another back-and-forth contest, senior
Samantha Hodges was pitted against Malin Leysen at No. 3. Hodges gave a valiant effort before falling in the first, 7-5. In the second set, Leysen closed the match out with 6-2 winner.
The 2018 regular season finale is set for Tuesday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m. from the Wagner Tennis Courts as the Seahawks host Monmouth University.
Tuesday is also Senior Day as the Green & White will recognize its three senior members:
Brenda Cumpa, Carolyn Gibson and
Samantha Hodges.
